what are the minimum requirements for size/brightness/location of sidelights???

I currently have no front side lights.

I am due an MOT and I assume I will need these to pass?

someone know otherwise?

So what are the minimum requirements for size/brightness/location??

And i'd rather not use the normal sidelights as there location has been reserved :smash:

All help appreciated

not sure but the stock ones on an import are really dim. Fairly sure they are a requirement for MOT though, when mine was freshly imported it had no sidelights and im pretty sure it failed on it.

ive got an import, not sure if this is the same on all zeds(most probably is) but mine double up as the fogs.

im also interseted in this as i want to remove my fogs/sidelights and replace with air inlets.

lol...yup...Ive removed the Fog/sidelights for the ducting of air to the brakes

But need to sort something if it is a requirement :(

I cant figure out quite what the MOT website is saying...

I think it says:-

Sidelights must be working if the ignition is off and mounted in such a way that it denotes the width of your vehicle and that they have to be bright enough to be visable from "a reasonable distance"

BUT

It doesnt say if you can wire up your std headlights to act as sidelights?

Or if you need seperate sidelights?

:smash: I can feel a bodge job comin on :smash:

OK....

How about this....

I have a jap import....

My indicators are of the front/side mounted kind.

I have a blank where there could be another bulb fitted in the indicator units.

Could I use this for a sidelight as I think possibly some uk versions may have this??...anyone??

AND

Does anyone have the plastic holders that I need to mount the bulbs??

Or even holders for these bulbs ive got?:-

the way i see it is...

old car's like the mk2 fiesta had the side lights inside the head light's and they passed the mot!! so why wouldn't yours if u constructed something along a simular line???

Just a thought   ;)

HHmmmm....

So could I rig up my headlights as sidelights aswell then?

seeing as there so pi55 poor anyway at least they wont be too bright :smash:

move them into the outside segment of the indicator housing, pretty sure you just need bulb holders and to drill out the blanking plate on the back.

thats the way i see it, grab your self a bulb holder and connect up theside light wiring(assuming you didnt cut it off!) and find a way of getting it inside the head lights, or as you were saying get some clear indicators, assuming you have the standard frontbumper and put the side lights in there, i had a jap import a while back and remeber doing something simular, just tring to think what......

ok gotit i did buy a set of clear indicators cos my front driving lamps were knackered, and put the side lights in them. mine passed an mot withit like that. hop this helps

Sounds like the best idea then really :)

Anyone know where I could get the bulbs and holders? :D

And darksider....I dont have a std bumper but the mounting points are the same..see below:-

Of course you can have the side lights in the headlights.

It pretty standard. Even new cars do it.

yup, you deffo need sidelights & they have to be white in colour (unless you have them in yellow headlamps! ;) )

as for fitting location, the MOT just says they must be "about the same height & the same distance from the side of the vehicle"

they do need to work independantly to the headlamps

HTH

OK....

Hi Steve,

I've been after the bulb holders for these "501" blade connector bulbs for months now ... and can't find a supplier :( If you (or anyone else) comes up with a source please, please, please let me know.

What you could do (temporarily) is to solder on the wires. Just make sure you connect them the right way around as LED's require the positive feed to be on the correct side (if that makes any sense).

Regards,

Dan

Ive trawled ebay and nowt....

But

Google is sooooooooooo good..lol

Here ya go:-

Wedge Bulb Holders

From Here:-

mot regs for front sidelights are they must be mounted equal distance out from centre of car and at the same height they can be incorporated into another lamp unit but must work independantly of lamp unit and with ignition switched off ,they must show only white light unless incorporated into a yellow tinted headlamp unit ( yellow not amber as in indicator lamp) so you can mount a seperate bulb into headlamp or clear/white section of indicator lamp or you can have a totaly seperate lamp, side lamp bulbs are normaly in the 5 to 10 watt range. Also should point out that vehicle lighting regulations are quite specific and even though your car may pass the mot your lights may actualy be mounted incorrectly and be classed illegal if checked by vosa the mot version of lighting regs does not give specific heights etc. only a basic guide as to what should pass and what shouldnt there is a minimum height for side lights but i couldnt tell you what that is but you would be definately ok mounting them in headlights and should be ok mounting them in beside indicators if using a seperate lamp mount it as close as you can to the same level as headlights and as far out to the side as you can and you should be ok. hth

Well....My verdict is on a 90 jap import that its best to drill a hole and fit the bulbs I had posted above as the sidelights within the indicator housing in the rear compartment.

It denotes the width clearly and precisley and are visiable from a very long distance.

So it cost me about £8 for sidelights :nana2:

Thanks again for all the help :duffer:

My side lights are the led kind bulbs you pictured and are rewired into the kerb lighting bit in the inducators (the blank bit on yours). Passed the mot no probs and look well cool. The wires to my fog lights have been cut so i may remove them as you have done.

im suprised you didnt stick a torch in the windscreen

YOU TIGHT FISTED SUVERNERS

if you look at mine it has no sidelights.

But to get though the MOT I drilled a hole into the light fitting and wired in some, I just used normal bulbs from used for sidelights. Passed so job done
