Air flow meter cleaning question

After reading shaunmac's post on sorting his hesitation problem how do you clean the Air flow meter. More importantly where the hell is it on the car??. Is it easy to do? Are there any tech write ups on the net?

Simon, I wouldn't try to clean the AFM !

it's VERY fragile and there's not much to clean anyway, apart from the connector.

It's under the nosepanel, connected to the air-filter

Thank you Eric. How are the Zeds going M8?. I hope all is going well over there!!

I will have a look at the connectors ( when I get my car back that is!! )and give them a clean now I know where to look. This must be about the only connector I have not cleaned so far!!

I cleaned the platinum wire & resistor by removing the silicon sealant around the square lid, removing the lid, de-soldering the connector, unscrewing circuit board & then removing circuit board along with sensors.

I just cleaned the wire & resistor with carb cleaner on a cotton bud.

Don't know if that's a good idea or not but it seemed to do the trick!

I'd be careful though cos you could knacker it completely!

Thanks for the breakdown on what to do. I will have a go at the weekend.

I can now picture all those people that have splashed out masses of money on new airflow meters wishing they had tried to clean them first biggrin.gif Saying that if I was doing this I would be VERY careful while doing it..... wink.gif

When re-sealing the lid, you're best using that orange gasket seal stuff u can get from Halfords cos it's pretty strong stuff and has very adhesive properties.

I heard a while back that they are about 600 squids to replace!!?? Is that right?

If so be VERY careful!

£600 fuck that, i've bought 2 for £55 and £60. S/H of course, think they are about £250-300 new.

I just had mine replaced at Nissan. It cost £356 + VAT. Thank God for the warranty!

Fucking hell!!! eek.gif £420ish

I think I'll get a few in, start cleaning with sand paper boys, be sure to rub that hot wire good and hard. wink.gif smile.gif smile.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
