Hi Folks,

Used to own a 280Z years ago, but I'm new to the world of the 300Z and turbo's but here goes: Picked up my Z yesterday and there are a couple of extra's on it. The guy I got it from imported the car and didn't know what they were and I'm guessing one is a boost controller.

See photo (crap I know) - It has a norm/set button that turns from orange to green when pressed, a row of LED's up to 1.4 and then a small dial at the other end with a min and max setting. I assume in Normal mode the car functions as normal. I haven't tried using it yet, but am I likely to notice much difference?.

There's also a boost guage stuck on the side of the dash, seems to follow the stock one quite well.

Updates images - still slightly out of focus :(

Have to say, I can't stop looking at the car ...... a thing of beauty

Cheers,

Gary

Be careful pal....I only say that because when I bought my zed the importer also told me he didn't know what it was and 6 months later my car is still off the road because the boost had been set stupidly high!!!!

Just a word of caution thats all not trying offend you>

either a boost controller or turbo timer i guess

Hmmm didn't think of a Turbo timer, but then the engine does not run on. The digits along the top of the LED's start at .5 and go up to 1.4

What's the standard boost of the Z in BAR?.

I'll try and take a better photo in the morning as it was to dark and this was the best of a bad lot.

i really wouldnt fiddle with it though mate!! get someone who is familair with it. as if u just turn up the boost it could instantly blow your turbos, and if thats 1.4 in bar then thatd completly feck them if it ran that high. do the leds flash and display what level when u drive? if they do have a look, anything up to 1.0bar is about the limit of standard tubs, i think. im no expert but thats my opinion

Cheers, yes point taken which is why I haven't fiddled with it yet and I'll probably not fiddle with it until I've had the car checked over and I know it's OK.

I got it from a guy in Birmingham who imported this Z and an MR-S (Jap MR-5) last year, but liked the MR-S so never registered the Z until last week.

try and have a look when u boot it and it reaches full boost if u can, have a look what it reads, in fact if u have a boost gauge then see what the reading is, i cant remember what stock boost is, is it 0.8bar? (sure most people on here will know) but all i know is you dont wanna be running more than 1.0bar or 15psi (14 point something if your being .anal!) anyway dont be too worried, if its been set up well then awesome, u got yourself some xtra power! has it got any other mods?

Not sure about the engine but I was told it has the updated bumpers front and rear and it has some after market 17 inch alloys, but time will tell whether it was a good buy or not.

If it is a boost controller it looks like it is set in Bar, I would not advise going above 1.0 bar.

No new info but a bit of a summary....

Standard boost is about 9 psi I believe and 1 bar is about 14 psi. So standard boost = approx 0.65 bar.

Ive looked in to this quite a bit and have been advised to run a max of just 1 bar (or 14 psi) on standard turbos etc

Please contradict if this is wrong as I'm having aboost controller fitted soon...

Yep, 1 bar is recomended max...but not becuase of the turbo's, but becuase the injectors are maxing out pass this and the Intercoolers cant cool the air sufficiently. With Bigger injecoctors and intercoolers the stock tub;s are efficient to 16/18psi, although their life would be shortened at that boost.

I agree mates, standard boost is about 7-9 psi. With the boost controller installed properly, on a twin turbo model z you should be able to run freely and safely at 14psi.

I maxed out my z with a turbo timer, cooler spark plugs from nissan, larger injectors, upgraded stage 4 turbos, and stillen larger intercoolers. I run 16 pounds of boost on the streets everyday without any problems.

I've added some slightly better pictures, but I'm pretty sure it's a boost controller, so thanks for all the advise folks. If I do decide to have a play, then I'll keep it below 1 bar.
