right then ive brimmed the zed again with optimax after putting some(13 litres) diesel in at the weekend :headvswal (still cant believe i did such a thing) the tank was about a 1/4 full(and running like poo) before i brimmed it and ive also added some STP fuel system cleaner, ive took it for about a 3mile run got it home and it still sounds a bit ropey, better but ropey.

im praying i havn't fooked my engine up it was so smooth before now

cheers

si

p.s. some sort of warning lights come on, under the speedo, looks like a cat warning light(like a bar of poo with steam coming off it :D ) but i dont think ive got any cats infact im sure, it doesnt seem to be in my manual, (ive a jap car with british manual) was coming on intermitantly on the motorway BEFORE refilling

You must have cats if the overheat warning light is coming on.

Probably got unburnt fuel in the cats and it's making them overheat?

Whatever it is, the only way you'll get it back to normal is flushing it out with normal running.

arent the cats closer to the engine than the backbox's

ive had a quick look under the car and looks like the pipes come straight down from the engine to silencers a few inches from the backbox's :x: or are they the cats :x: its an aftermarket exhuast 5zigen

Sh1t I would've though the best thing to do would be to flush the tank straight away by a decent garage. I did that once in a VW Polo years ago, filled it up with Diesel and it weren't a happy bunny.

I had to get a garage to flush the tank and the fuel lines properly, I really wouldn't think that trying to flush it with normal running on a car like a Z would be a good idea.

if the cats are glowing , there is too much diesel still in, best bet is to drain the tank and fill up with petrol, or ul do some damage to the engine

Backboxes are at the...errrr...back lol

The cats are the smaller sections under the cover near the gearbox and have temperature sensors in them.

Can't see it will do much harm other than messing up the fuel filter with the amount you put in.

Get to a garage and flush the diesel out otherwise you'll kill it mate. Petrol in a diesel you can get away with but not the other.

other way round - petrol can dissolve the rubber in diesel fuel pumps etc, but not vice-versa.

With the amount you put in you'll be fine - I remember reading the tolerance for how much diesel can be put in a petrol stations petrol tanks before needing to be drained (when done by mistake - not general practice!!) and it was gobsmackingly high!!

Rich

petrol in a diesel (in anything other than very small amounts) is very bad!! esp in modern common rail high pressure systems.

petrol has no lubrication properties & fooks everything!

Hasn't he put diesel in a petrol? LOL :D

LOL!! yeah, i was referring to the above posts!! :wack:

just in case anyne does a diesel conversion!! :D

That is your Z adapting to the diesel and it's now grown some glo-plugs.

When Si posted this the other day everyone was saying yes it's fine just fill it with petrol and when it's all gone get a new fuel filter and use some injector cleaner.

New thread and everyone is panicking...

Just shows what great advice you get on here sometimes

id just fill it with petrol, get a new filter & run some cleaner through it!! ;) :D

LMFAO :D

I have to confess, I've done the same. Reason being, the yellow of the diesel pump and the light green of the S U/L pump had faided due to sunlight and were the same colour at this particular filling station....plus, the pumps were next door to each other.

Realised after putting 65p worth of diesel in that my hands felt like they do when I put diesel in my Astra. So immediately brimmed with Super unleaded. Was lucky as I didn't put more than about 70cl in. But 13 litres??....dude, get it drained.

If he's filled it with petrol that means it's about 5 parts petrol to 1 of diesel?

Wouldn't have thought that was a problem as diesel is only going to lubricate things a bit more than normal and make it sluggish for a while.

Diesel is a "heavy" type of fuel and the amount he has dumped in the tank is probably gonna do more harm if he carries on running it.

Sure the injectors won't take kindly to 13 litres of diesel, I would have the tank drained and flushed asap.

bloody hell peeps, make ya minds up im sh1tin myself now :x: :headvswal

i filled up last night i added £42(not sure how many litres that is)of optimax to 1/4 tank of the super unleaded, diesel mix and i also added some fuel system cleaner, car is running better but not as smoove as BEFORE I FOOKED UP!!

i must pointout the diesel i put in was BPs ULTIMATE DIESEL which i assume is some sort of "super" DIESEL,

i would have drained it personally dunno if it would do any harm tho?

ok quick question. which floats on top, petrol or diesel? does it actually mix.

i would have drained to be on the safe side, but i am no mechanic.

diesel being heavier and a higher viscosity rating will sit on the bottom, like oil and water dont mix.

Yeah but its not oil and water it's 2 petroleum products that I would have thought would mix?

Me being an expert chemist and all that...

I think i will add to the debate LOL. I would drain it myself. Diesel is an oil based product. Im no scientist but diesel is burnt by pure compression and requires no spark whatsoever but petrol as we all know requires a spark. So where does the diesel end up if the right process for burning isnt followed? It must lie somwhere. I cant see it doing any injectors or other components with presice tollerances any good. If it was an old escort etc... take the gamble but for the sake of 40/50 quid on a zed :nono: get it flused bud or else :headvswal
