Hi guys, im looking to buy a chip off a forum member for my 300. The chap in question has been most helpfull but talk of boost jets and mig tips have thrown me, can anyone shed some light on this? I know I must do this JET MOD but where do they go and whats with the mig tip bit? Please advise

Boost jets are small jets that restrict the airflow to the turbo actuator, allowing a higher boost pressure to be reached.

The smaller the bore of the jet, the more the increase in possible boost.

Mig tips can be used as jets as they vary in size. Smaller the size, the higher the boost.

If you fit some boost jets, buy a quality aftermarket boost gauge!!

Or just fit a Boost controller, more money, but at least you know what is happening and you can control it!!

Personally, I wouldnt have Boost Jets

Just buy a bag of 1mm welding tips M8. Far cheaper than buying proper boost jets and do the same thing.

If you look at the car from the front there are 4 quite large IC pipes, 2 on the left and 2 on the right. The ones you want are the inside 2. there are 2 smaller tubes that fit into these pipes (fitting located underneath sortof hidden a bit). Just pull these small tubes off, they may be VERY stuck, mine were, and push one of the tips/jets into each tube then replace the tubes. I found it easier to remove the IC pipes first so you can see what you're doing better.

Do a search as there's a good fitting guide with picy's floating around somewhere but can't remember where. hope that helps M8.

Just read you previous thread on when you fitted your jets, is all well now?

Many thanks for that mate.

Car is running great. Well it was till the De-cat thing anyway. I had problems with safety boost but corrected itself the next day.

Did m8's car too after mine and his did the same but his boost is a bit lower than mine, with the same jets !

Boost is stable at just under 14 PSI and the ignition is advanced slightly with no detting any thing. (You got me worried about the Lambda sensors now though, lol).

From what I gathered previously 1.2mm jets will result in circa 12 psi and 1.0mm jets will give ~14 psi. All cars will act differently because of the age and conditions of he turbo. Upping the boost will make you engine run faster and things that may not have went for a few months may start failing earlier. But thats just the way the cookie crubles. I am running 1.0mm boost jets at the moment. I also just removed the hoses and replaced with new hoses. Trying to remove the jets from the hoses is a pain in the a55 too so I suggest buying hose from Smithy and having 1 set of lines with 1.0mm mig tips and 1 set with 1.2mm tips. This allows you to swap over the hoses to choose between standard, 12 or 14 psi.

I did the same than Dave. I put some longer hoses with some DIY alloy boost jets.

I will cut the hoses a bit each time I want to replace the boost jets.

With a center hole of 1.5mm, I got 11 psi this WE.

I'm going to try 1.0mm now to reach 14-15 psi as wanted.

yeah, they'll do fine, probably don't need 25 though!

Cheap enough though?

Could sell the rest...

Do i put the whole thing (tip) in the pipe or do cut it down at all?

There's loads of posts on these things. They are susceptible to boost spikes, as well as being inconsistant anyhow. You wont know they are killing the engine until the damage has been done. Deffo don't use them unless you have a good quality boost gauge. Makes much more sense buying an electronic boost controller.

Dave

yes, but even electronic boost controllers go wrong don't they?

here's how you fit them...

it's so simple and so effective!

The reason why i asked cuz the ones i saw on Ebay seem to be hexagonal in diameter-surely they wouldnt fit in pipe without air getting past flat sides of the tip?

I know you can get round diameter ones so i will get some of tham instead-trying to track down a replacement ECU first tho that can handle the boost.

Makes much more sense buying an electronic boost controller.

why??

boost jets are very inaccurate and amplify boost spikes, which can/will damage the engine. i also doubt that you'd be generating exactly the same amount of boost pressure from either turbo, which would also harm the engine.

a decent electronic boost controller is designed to prevent boost spikes giving a constant boost pressure, and also giving you control over the amount of boost created, rather than just sticking a jet in and hoping for the best.

personally i wouldn't fit boost jets, there's too much that could go wrong. if necessary buy a second hand boost controller, thats what i'm doing till i can afford a Power FC

an EBC is of course better than jets, just to put some perspective on the subject tho - mines been running 16psi on jets for over 30,000 miles now :)
