Engine Supplier

Well looks like I need a new engine, just waiting for the garage to stick a camera in the engine, but looks bad.

Any suggestions for a supplier of new and recon engines?

There is a complete engine sitting in the garage at MJP right now. It's the one to which my manual gearbox was attached before Saturday morning ! Done 50K approx.

Hi Andy

So thatengine was on your car?

I mailed mike at MJP said some bits were not on (crank angle sensor, trignition and balance pipe) would these be expensive. He also said he's open to a sensible offer, how much do you think, I'm clueless.

Was it running OK when you got rid?

sorry for all the questions.

BTW, spoke to my garage this afternoon, they had done the camera thing, he said a rebuild could be done and would be a long difficult job, he will quote me for the job tomorrow, is a rebuild worth it or should I go with a 2nd hand engine? confused.gif

John,

IMHO, if you can afford to get a reputable place to do a rebuild then it's money well spent. A well rebuilt engine will be as good as, and often better than, new. You will also have full history.

Personally I would never buy a car with a second hand engine - by doing that you make the service history pointless (from an engine point of view).

Having said that, you can get lucky and get a bargain. It's just that you're looking at a lot of expense to remove the engine and, once removed, it's not that much more complex than any other.

Perhaps you could get Nico to do it. I hear he can rebuild an engine in less than 3 years !

John,

sorry to hear your bad news.

It's my guess that you've seized a camshaft and the valves have hit the piston causing severe damage. (This is my guess and it would be interesting to find out what happened!

You could just go with rebuilt heads and pistons if they are damaged. Courtesy can provide the prices for the replacement parts but it's probably going to set you back the same amount of £ as a second hand engine.

The parts that are missing from the engine at MJP could be salvaged from your current engine if you decide to go that way.

If its any interest, I have a stock short block with 50k miles on it.

John,

No not my engine, it was in the car being broken by Kash/MJP. I have bought the manual box. Don't know how good the engine is, but it was definitely running when it crashed the car ! By the look of the parts missing you could easily replace them with those from your car. However, as others have said, wait and see what the damage is before you go buying new engines. I hear that a 2nd hand engine could be something like £1500. I reckon that should you decide to go for it, then should be be aiming to pay under a grand for this one, bearing in mind the parts that are missing etc. My favoured option would be a full rebuid/recon - then you will end up with an engine that is almost as good as new (to go with your great respray).

Cheerz Guys

I'll have more info on the rebuild hopefully tomorrow and maybe need some more advise. I'm still to pissed off to feel really bad about this yet, give it a couple of days.

What sort of price do you guys reckon for a rebuild??

Steve whould that be the same as is about to come off?

I trust the garage that I use they do a lot of rebuilds etc for the rally car, there also a performace car specialist, but the've only done 1 Z before.

Maybe I should sell the shell and buy something a bit more reliable frown.gif
