Hey guys

could anyone post a pic showing how they cut the alcantara to go round the corners - rear top is the worst as it's most visible. Just struggling to get it round the radius without looking rubbish!!

cheers

yes, that'd be sound - I need to know that too - I just got some thick Vinyl and am about to start retrimming mine.

Without thread stealing, do you remove all the tweed and glue the vinyl straight onto the hard plastic with the aid of a hairdryer for shaping?.

I was gonna get a thin layer of foam underneath but dont think I need to.

yep - remove it all. I've seen someone suggest removing the fabris and leaving the "inter-layer" of vinyl but I didn't bother and it looks fine (apart from the corners!!).

I ironed the fabric to heat the glue and make it easier to remove the edges, then it just pulls off pretty easily.

you should find vinyl slightly easier as it will mould to the curves better with a little heat from a hair drier...

good luck!

Cheers bud, one last thing.

I just got some heavy duty fabric spray glue - will that do. Is it a case of just spraying the fabric, laying it on and then putting a hairdryer on it to set it?

When doing a seat retrim, the more "reputable" companies (like Aston Martin) will always use a secondary layer underneath the leather/alcantara/etc. This is there to stop the top layer from stretching beyond it's limits and tearing over time. If you look at seats which have been retrimmed previously and have tears up and down the seat you'll probably find they didn't put a secondary layer underneath.

I did mine a couple of years ago but I am going to get it redone professionally this year. I removed all the old tweed except for what was on the doors, used that as a template for cutting out the new alcantara and got an Aunt to do the stitching as the alcantara would not sit right on the tight corners. I used an expensive alcantara which I have been told is a lot more difficult to use but has a much better feel about it, I have attahced some pics but bear in mind it is a couple of years old now and not looking as good as it did when first done.

hmmm... depends on how it reacts to heat - I'm using solvent contact adhesive as I know this is ok when the car gets baked in the sun. I'd roughly shape the vinyl before putting the glue on - it's only tight corners you'll need to form as vinyl has a surprising amount of stetch in it.

on seats possibly, but no need on doors etc as they're not subject to movement.

Yep - Im gonna take this glue back and get a high temp one (Where from??!!?).

OR contact adhesive - (does that have to be high temp)?

Cheers people.

I bought the high temp one because a bloke recommended it, cant remember why now, I got it from Partco, HTH.

I just got normal contact adhesive from B&Q after reading through some write ups... i think the problem with the non-solvent one is it can bubble in the heat. Just be prepared to wait while the numpty goes to a; get permission to sell it because they're not old enough to sell it themselves, b; finds the bloody stuff!!
