Featured Replies

I've got one, full UR set, haven't noticed any excessive vibrations compared to before..

But it's only been on for about 50 miles!

I would also like some info on this please wink.gif.

Timmy you junior LOL!

you can get about 25 bhp increase , so i have looked up but that is only one site ,hence why i am asking! (I WANT MORE OUTRIGHT PULL OFF THE mARK)

please !!!? biggrin.gif

there is massive debate about these on T.T.net appaently in theory they don't provide enough damping and can cause component failure.

That said, I have never seen a post from someone who has a problem related to one, but by the same token, I have never seen a really high powered Z with one either....

The damping thing has been talked about a lot but the lads in the states have been running them for a few years now and it seems that they havnt had any problems. Ive got one in the box ready to go on when i do the cambelt.

Anyway they say that a lightened alluminium flywheel reduces stress on the crank so fit both then the benefits of the flywheel will cancell out the drawbacks of the pulley biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I came across this technical article a while back: www.dinanbmw.com/html/danger_of_power_pulleys.htm

I would have thought the same principles and issues apply to Z engines?

-Andrew

Speak to Steve E, he is removing his after getting bad vibration through the engine.

I suggest you read the link given by AndrewG.

This gives you the full picture.

I wouldnt use one, its there for a reason to prolong engine life, and remove the vibrations which may cause premature engine failure.

But make you own mind up after readin the article.

Leigh.

I've got one too, in a box waiting to go on along with shit loads of other bits and pieces! LOL biggrin.gif

That would be the same SteveE who suggested that my UR pulley could fly off and go straight throught the rad? ROFL biggrin.gif

Just because people were suggesting that if your lightened flywheel goes West it usually tries slicing you in half!!! ROFLMFAO biggrin.gif

Hey Tim... you've got a memory like an elephant...I'd forgotten about that one wink.gif

My AS lightened pulley is for sale!

I can't be sure whether I am noticing any vibration because of this but I have now ordered the JUN lightened flywheel instead and am replacing the original pulley with harmonic balancer on advice from my engine builder.

Lots of people have fitted underdrive pulleys and I don't know of any engine failures through doing this.

Therefore if you want one then buy mine smile.gif

(P.S Tim, I was worried incase it came off at 160mph)

If your pulley comes off at any speed then you've got one hell of a problem... smile.gif

Unless someone forgot to put the crank bolt back in wink.gif And even *I'm* not thad bad! Lol biggrin.gif

I've got Underdrive pulleys -the full set incl accesory pulleys. I'm running somewhere in the low 400's for hp. No vibes, no probs. Pete R atSE had some reservations but he has done some research into the Z crank etc and reckons thereisn't a problem. He's now done his own version.

Theory is it releases 2.8bhp for every 1 pound lost off the crank. If you ever pick up the std crank pulley you'll need two hands - unless you're a lumberjack. The URpulleys arelike a fag packet in comparison. The weightreduction makes the engine rev much more easily - a bit more like a bike engine. Well worth it. Plus there is no additional heat or boost pressure to worry about as you are not making extra power, but using wot u gt. I also have a lightened flywheel - so maybe that makes a difference..

Do you know how much lighter than stock your flywheel is?

Do you have any problems during every driving with a lighter flywheel?

Steve

No I don't. The lightening happened because my new RPS clutch didn't fit properly and SE had 5 mm skimmed off the flywheel for about 1 inch all around so that the clutch would sit lower against the f/wheel. I believe RPS now supply a new master cylinder to avoid the problem

It can be tricky to balance the revs/clutch on the line. I tend to overcompensate against stalling and over rev pulling away . But the engine revs very freely. Pulleys & f/wheel make a difference - more to the character of the engine than outright hp.

Off topic: Steve, when are we EVER gonna see this beast? Billing? wink.gif

Steve E. Standard flywheel weighs (gulp) 10kg !!! I know this because when I rebuilt my engine, I skimmed a couple of mm or so off it, and reduced weight by 1kg.

No idea how light aftermarket flywheels are though, if aluminium, they gotta be 6/7kgs??

Some interesting figures is this article:- http://www.ttzd.com/tech/pulleytech.html regarding weight saving & HP gain.

I have a ASP Underdrive Pulley to fit to my car, which is the main pulley + Gates belts. Other kits have new pulleys for the ancillaries as well as a lightened main pulley & new belts (perhaps the main pulley is not lightened as much as the ASP kit?). Any comments on the ups and downs/differencies of each kit type?

Geoff

Tim,

The beast was out last Saturday after 3 months of standing still.

The car started quicker than my daily driver, although I do keep the the levels on the battery topped up.

Scared myself sh#tless so put it back in the garage wink.gif

The next RR day would be good meet.

I have the full UR kit (main and all accessory pulleys), and I can attest that the main pulley is very, very light.. As far as I know, the accessory pulleys are only there for looks..
