looking at getting another bike for the summer (cos i cant afford another zed yet :( ), and cant decide what to go for.

got a budget of about 2.5k, so ive narrowed it down to the suzuki tl1000s or the tl1000r model or the gsxr750, with the tl1000s being my number 1 choice.....just.

just wanted to know if any of you guys got any experience about these bikes?

ive read of people having probs with the handling and "tank slappers" on the tl1000s and then another review will tell you this is a load of crap!!!

also ive never had a v-twin, so are these better or not?

thanks in advance - gaz!

I had an R6 and nearly bought a TL1000R, but didn't like the way the power was delivered, a bit like a diesel turbo, loads of power low down - then nothing, they are a handful, got to ride them completely different than a normal 4 in line bike....... if you like wheelies then get a TL...... if you like the boom boom of a V Twin then definately get a TL with race cans - the neighbours won't like you much for it though...

Besides the R6 will p**s on the TL - loads better handling.....

you won't get a TL1000R, well a good one anyway, for £2.5K...... unless you've seen the bargain of the year somewhere ?

cheers

Andy....

ps : if I got another bike it would be the GSXR750 - pure beast...... and they still look the part too....

you are limiting your range of bikes for £2.5K though, for that price they will be a bit old with a few miles on them, raise it to £3k or just above then your choice will go up loads mate.....

TLS is a great bike, its the early 96/97 ones that were a bit lively on the handling side!! Go for as late one as poss as they were more advanced later on, 2500 will get you a minter.

TLR, soggy handling for a sprts bike, but great engines, 10bhp ish more than the TLS and different gearing, TLS in my opinion is a better bike thou!

GSXR750, Great bike!! Nuff said, Just look out for dogs, they've ALL been thrashed!!

V-twin engines are lots more torquey (sp) than an inline 4, there redline is on aveage 300rpm lower aswell, they wheelie very easily, they take a while to get used to.

Dont forget about the VTR1000 Firestorm aswell, IMHO its the most underated bike on the market!!

HTH

Rich

I had a GSXR 750 great bike i would have another one if the Mrs would let me.

quick reply bud!

ive seen a tl1000s on a 2000 v plate with 21K for £2150 . its had the rear suspension changed which should improve it, and has got aftermarket cans. hpi clear and FSH. guys in a hurry to sell as hes moving.

i know it wont handle as good as the r6, but then im not i sure want a full race rep bike (thats why im considering a gsxr 750  ). just thought the tl1000s would be better than your race bikes for taking my wife out on the back???

i wouldnt have a v twin.. they feel dreadfull after you have had a proper 4 cylinder sports bike.... Gixer all the way for me :D

so does the tl1000s handle better than the tl1000r model? kinda thought there wouldnt be that much in it?

as much as i do like the gsxr, i reckon for my money im gunna get a better tl than the gsxr.

Older bikes do suffer from wear on the suspension and chassis bearings.

I just spent a similar amount on a bike and went for something newer and smaller. I've had R1s, GSXR1100s etc in the past too.

For £2500 I'd go for a 1999 CBR600 or a 2002 Fazer 600. Not as exciting as a TL but you'll be quicker on them.

If you do go for a TL-S, check the frame for cracks near where the rotary rear damper mounts - the frame will crack right through there. Try and get a bike with an aftermarket conventional shock as the rotary one is not good. Check the head bearings and remeber early ones made 120+ RWBHP while later ones were more like 105.

yeah the TL1000S is more a sports tourer, so 2 up would be bearable......

i'm more into fire breathing sports bikes, so would go for the TL1000R.....

good luck..

Andy...

by the way the reason i bought the Z was because i sold my Astra Coupe Turbo cause they are shite and wanted another bike, the missus talked me out of it at the last minute, was going for an R1, she convinced me to get a weekend car instead of a weekend bike, then she could come along, so i bought a Z with the cash instead and went on holiday and bought a new bathroom, cash now gone, and i'm glad I did....

I wouldn't go near a TL. They're not that reliable, the R is heavy and both are less exciting than their reputations make people think.

see this is the same as the reviews i read.

some of you say its an alright bike.....then some hate it.

what do i do???? :headvswal

The problem with TLs is they're all owned by big northern lads who are 'in it for the crack' and work in the clutch fitting centre during the week and do enormous wheelies while wearing jogging trousers and a puffa jacket.

In short, it was OK when it came out but they're pretty much all shagged now.

For the sort of money you're thinking (exactly what I wanted to spend) I was prepared to consider a number of bikes and just wanted a really nice example, regardless of which bike it was.

You'd get a nice 2001 ZX-6R for that money. I looked at two and nearly bought one of them.

edit - or a firestorm like Rich says - post 2000 (HISS imobiliser equipped) are best thanks to a higher screen, FI and a bigger tank.

Loved the TLS hated the TLR, just got shot of a firestorm, buletproof, lovely sound, but I prefer in-line fours. Bought a 97 blade, mint, with less than 7.5k miles on it back end of last year cost me 2.5 grand. I think the way the market for second hand bikes is at the moment, your narrowing your field too much, their is a sh1t load out there for that money.

firestorm for me all the way ...if its a twin you want for reasonable money without going into ducati territory,

in line 4's big kwaka's flick my switch 750 ZXR timeless styling great handling but heavy ..ZXR 600 and 900 good good bikes ....ZZR 900 good all rounder and the

VFR Honda ....all should be considered ...if you like sitting on a razor blade and being uncomforatble after an hour of riding buy a Yamaha R1 or R6 if its out right handling fun performance but not bothered about build quality that much buy a Gixer nothing comes close to their overall package in my opinion ..

glad ive read your post as i just got a zx9r ninja!!!

got a 1999 t reg "c2" model. was damged but now repaired and got it for 2k which i thought is ok..........roll on the summer!

thanks for all the replies!

I just recently sold my GSXR 750R and was very sad. But an arm injury has left me with no other choice.

But I would recommend one to anyone. The insurance is reasonable the perfomance very good and the overall feel and handling of the bike is second to none. IMO.

They are a lovely bike I only got £1500 for mine. But wasnt asking anymore so wasnt dissapointed. Shame about my arm but after getting rid of my XJR1200 last year I was so sick I want another one now. Maybe next year I will get a GSX1400. Just concentrating on my cars this year tho.
