I want to get my old tweed replaced, can anyone who has done it give any advice? I would like the ones from zcentre but £200 is a lot at the mo...

 

Who has done it and did you do it yourself? Is there a cheaper option?

Leather or vinyl?

This is what I did myself in vinyl. About £40 for vinyl, bought a staple gun, £30 in glue and a couple of pounds for speaker wire to trim top of doors.

You could do it all in a good days work!

Personally I think leather needs to be done professionally, requires stitching IMHO to fit right.

How did you get it to bend into the corners? I tried it on 1 panel with red leather and it sucks...

He used vinyl bud easier to shape than leather, but rips easier as well.

I am thinking alcantara will be easier to work with but it is expensive. Anyone used the kit from zcentre? Is it easy to fit?

Ive got one of those kits in white decided not to fit it as it is a pain in the arse and there not perfectly cut to fit you will still need to trim it up.Its cheaper to buy a roll of vynil and do it yourself

Looked at it but it looks too much like PVC...I reckon alcantara would be easy to fit as it is so soft and pliable, vinyl is a PITA to be honest. The trim has so many curves etc it is a nightmare to get it to look good...

If I was going to buy a leather kit, it would most certainly be from the Zcentre. He just seems to only deal in quality goods, and that is from experience..

ive just recovered mine in vynil, but mine has a grain in it and looks just like leather, it was about £9 a metre if you can find a good upholsterer theres so many colours and different grains some just look like real leather, and vinyl realy easy to get round curves i just used an hairdryer to shape it.

I mean, doing it yourself you will be around £100 from what I can gather, if you have to buy all materials. On top of that you have to spend what 10 hours minimum.

 

I will be doing it soon, but going for Zcentre kit. Good company and is all the hassle worth £100 and a days work?? I would prefer to do it right in the first place, even though my mum is a professional sewing machinist which would save me the hassle of perfect fitting.

 

Would still like to see some pics from the Zcentres kit.

The Zcentre kit is just the same as the ebay kits.. They are just precut pieces of fabric. The labour is the same for fitting.

 

Its a lot of money just to have the material precut IMO

So all in all I would be better of doing it myself with alcantara???

Yes your much better off to buy a roll of material and do it your self or pay someone to do it

my car was prt done in one of those kits when i bought it i tackled the rest of the car myself and i must say the vinyl is crap hardly any give in it to stretch it round the bendy bits and when you heat it to stretch it ,it goes smooth and looses it texture then looks crap compared to rest of the panel. your much better off going to your local fabric shop and buying upholstery vinyl re did mine in that and it great loads of stretch amd you dont need to heat it either

i removed the tweed on mine bit of a pain but it leaves you a nice smooth surface to work with much better than trying to put it over the top the tip is let the door card heat up before you remove the tweed

Now I'm intrigued, is every part that you guys have covered removable? Is it simple to remove all parts? I've got my door trim off when fitting component speakers and that was a bit of a mission!
