noticed some people have changed to a thicker engine oil after having fitted decats/free flowing exhuast to help prevent turbo seal damage.

is this the norm?

It can help.

When my seals went I put thicker oil in and it stopped the smoking for a few months.

Castrol or millers 10/60 these are the only two oils i recommend and you certainly can not go any thicker

There is no thicker than an sae 60 and unless you have excessive oil temps (by that I mean above 120degC) you don't need an sae 60. If the car is a stock road car use 5w-40 or 10w-40. If the car is heavily modded than 10w-50.

Nissans recommendation is sae 30 or sae 40

Cheers

Simon
