Hi, I've registered on behalf of a friend who has major problem with his car for a number of years. He's not technical in the slightest and needs to find someone who can make sense of his car. I'm more of a Chevy V8 man so need to do my homework on all this computer/turbo stuff.

The car is a Japanese imported 93 Twin Turbo, it has a Veilside system installed uprated turbos, intercooler etc and a Ferrari F40 style body kit fitted before it arrived in the UK. In its' day it has won awards and was supposed to be good for 500 horses.

About 4 years ago he had the engine and auto transmission rebuilt at a cost of about £14000 (quite scary from my perspective!).

Anyway due to a legal dispute with the work the car has been sat for a number of years and is now quite rotten and tired looking, the engine isn't running properly at all, it was taken to Nissan to have a look at, they've had it 6 months and have given up arguing that because of the Veilside system they can't run diagnostics to determine what's wrong.

IMO this is nonsense as although it allows you to alter settings on the fly the car should run without it and thus is bypassable.

The car is back home and to me there's a problem with Mass Air Flow sensor(s), as the engine hunts and runs very rich, however there are several sensors which have been disconnected, one of which is on the intake. I'm suspecting that the computer is at fault, the management light no longer illuminates which suggests that Nissan have removed the bulb!

Because of my background with Chevys my mate has asked if I can sort this however it's a very different beast from what I know.

I need to source service manuals and what not, but ideally I'm looking for a mechanic near Leeds that is sh1thot on these engines and knows about the Veilside modifications so that I can get them to let me know what the crack is and how to move forward.

I admit this a quite a lot for a first post but my friend absolutely loves his car and has spent a fortune on it but at the moment you wouldn't offer more than £500 for it which is breaking his heart. He'll get the body resprayed and all the cosmetics sorted once the car is running properly.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Cheers

Matthew

Best advice i can give is tell you friend to take it to one of the traders garages on here to be fixed.

If he is throwing that kind of money at the car he wont mind a bit more and having it done propperly by someone who kows what they are doing.

That's the problem every garage I've called or taken the car to doesn't know what to do with it, this Veilside thing seems to scare everyone off.

Surely other people have this thing fitted.

Anyone recommend a garage in the North?

Personaly i would say try and get the car to Z-Tech http://www.ztech.co.uk . One of our traders. Sure Ryan and Greg can work their magic on this Zed for you. :smash:

Are you sure that this Veilside system replaces that factory ECU system?, I don't think they ever did a standalone ECU for the Zed. Have a look at the ECU box under the passenger side footwell, should be a gold coloured box about 6" square by about 2" deep. If it still has a standard ECU box (whether it be modified with an aftermarket chip or not), you should be able to run the self diagnostics to at least see whether there are any fault codes showing.

If it has a completely non-standard ecu, then it would be a specialist job unfortunately.

If it is a Veilside rechipped stock ecu then follow ECU diagnostics here : http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostictech.html

When you say that there is a sensor disconnected on the intake, do you mean under the nose code by the Air filter ?....thats the MAF/AFM and would certainly explain some of the problems.

Not looked at the ECU (only found out today where it lives), AFAIK the Veilside sits between the ECU and the engine), will look at the self diagnostics this week, the diagnostic light on the dash doesn't work, so I think that's my first fix.

It's such a shame to see this car in the state it's in, it was so totally awesome when he bought it.

You can use the Light on side of ECU for diagnosing rather than the dash light.

Good luck.

Just called up Z-Tech, seem like a decent bunch of chaps, offered to find out what's wrong with the car for free so we like them. Just got to arrange transport now.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll post up their findings.
