Z headlights, I know this has been done to death etc.

Right, these things are baking my noodle big time!

I came to the conclusion that when I drive back from down south to de Wales they heat up the lenses and burn off the misty stuff! So theory being that by the time I get close to home they produce a similar amount of light as any normal car should...not so.

Sometimes the lights are completely arse and like tonight, me and the Mrs went on a shortish journey and they were bang on. What is going on? Is it possible that the bulb is moving around inside the lense? I don't think so. But I am absolutely bamboozled on this one. One minute they are shite and next they are like a sodding lighthouse on acid!

Tell you the truth, to me they are useless. The only need is for other people to see you.

The main beam is fantasic, IMHO.

I know what you mean about them being good somtimes and then bad. When I changed my blulbs, on dip it lit up the whole dirve, but then driving round, especially when its wet, I have to double check that the light are on.

I didnt even realise that on bulb was out until I saw it from the outside. Usually I can tell cos one half of the road isnt llit up

Stuart

Stu mate you're right,

I've had other cars coming towards me, and on these dark roads in de Wales...Aiiii, I've had to hit the brakes and virtually stop coz I couldn't see where the road was going! Not funny!

Haven't the Supras got the same setup though? I noticed a lovely Mk IV at work this past few weeks and looking at his headlights they seem to be the same sort of design. That round lense for the main beam, full as you say Stu is spot on. However, when I put the full beam on it's as my Mercs normal driving headlights!

My experience with the Z lights is that it has nothing to do with the reflector! If they are good one time and then arse the next how can it be the reflector?

My main beam is good. Might have higher watt bulbs in. But I know what you mean about the light coming towards you. Usually normal car light still have enough light for you to see even though your eyes are set on the light coming towards you. But they are so dim, on coming traffic, especially areas with no street lights, just drown out yours.

I was going down the M58 towards Liverpool where there are no street lights, I couldnt have main beam on cos cars the other way, and I couldnt see any more than 6 feet infront of my car. It wasnt even bright enough to light up the cats eyes for gods sake.

The lights are too low and too far set back, meaning the focus of the light is far away and spread over a too large area rendering it use-less.

Normal car have the lights right at the front, and higher up, meaning the lights are able to light up the road closer to the car, and its a more conserntrated area.

Here is a diagram to explain more. Cos I was bored

I am about to print it off and put it on the fridge door. wink.gif biggrin.gif

Stuart

Tell me about it lads.

On the way back from Jeffs last weekend, I nearly mounted the central reservation due to low beam strength.

I feel Jeffs shiny mod coming on. Chrome sheeting already bought. Only £5.99 from HomeBase.

I got the chrome stuf ready for fitmsnt i am toatlally pissee ND AM NOT GOING TO BOTHER CORRENCYIN G ANYHTING I TYPER EVEN IF IT IS ABSOLUTE BOLLOCKS. THE LIGHTS ARE SHIT AND THATS ALL THER E SIS TO IT IS YOU ASK ME.

Like you Stuart I find main beam very good wink.gifbut on dip with oncoming traffic, and in the rain,I would see more with a fu**in torch strapped to my front wing frown.gifI wonder how much improvment there would be with that conversion that Jeff does???Anyone got it?

Timmy you junior LOL!

Complete arse these lights, like Timmy said going down a country lane or whatever, oncoming have to slow right down cause I can't see the fecking road, BOLLOCKS. I'm going to strap half a dozen 6 cell Maglites to me car to get some extra lights, cost a fortune on batteries but hey we all drive Z's and know about expense. mad.gif

Regards

JOHN(sunday lunch KING)

Tim,

Maybe you have an earthing problem !!! It seems to have been discussed on some of the Jap sites.

TimT, I agree with AndyP's last comment here. The earth wire had come loose on my N/S headlight. I didn't notice at first until I wired it up directly to a car battery to test my new bulbs n stuff (chrome film, etc), and heard a buzzing - and see arcing under the screw for the earth. Tightened it up and the headlight got 50% brighter! Sorted.

Cheers guys, earthing problem would make alot of sense. Sorry I got my main beam and dipped all mixed up! Doh!

My main beam is plastic fantastic but it's the dipped that is arse.

John I know exactly what you are saying like everyone else mate. I have to virtually stop when I become a rabbit for the night in oncoming traffic...LOL biggrin.gif Maybe I should try the zig-zag manoeveure a la road kill technique? biggrin.gif

Is`nt there a way of re aligning the main beam so that you could have that on all the time without blinding everyone?

Or is that illegal / fail the Mot`s ville?

Main beam = brilliant, just like everyone elses normal headlights.

Dipped beam = Fuck me im gonna die any minute

now!

Hmm guys you need enlightenment (pardon the pun)

The reflector mod that basically I stummbled across is and I repeat is a 150% gold plated success.Despite all resevations about film peal and dulling I have experienced no problems. The output pattern is now as good if not better than the wife`s Ford Focus and they are good. The only mistake I made was not to replace the anti moisture packs whilst the headlight was apart, so have experienced some steaming up on wet days, however the lights are coming back out this week for that to be remedied as well as fitting some further side light bulbs in there so the jap spec spotlights are not illumiinated with two candles! kinda looks soft with my bright dip beam now.

The light output success can be best described by the how when returning from a long wet night journey with no problems seeing I pulled up at home to find one bulb had gone and I had been driving with one headlight and could see just fine! imagine that with standard dip beam !! come on guys get them reflectors done, I am doing some for a couple of you now so will get some feed back of others not just me, oh Danny has been out with me at night so he can comment. Jeff TT

Ps Danny?

Ok Jeff give me a price I am up for it!

Timmy you junior LOL!

Jeff,

Do you mean that one of your new 130w/100w ?? bulbs has failed already ? How hot do they get in there? When I was looking at Crazy Eddies' car I noticed that he had a couple of holes drilled in the top of the headlamp shells -presumably to let some of the heat out.

I agree with IanD, main beam is just about upto what my Mercedes produces on dipped!

Bloody damn bleedin' fine lights on the Kirk! wink.gif

Also rake adjustable...heee heee heee biggrin.gif

I had an Astra before, and the lights had a similar problem as the Z. The area infront of the car was not lit up well, the main beam was OK.

I fitted some Halogen Spots. Considering they where only 55w, they where fantastic. I used to blind myself if I was near a road sign when I turned them on.

many years ago my cossie had 90/dip,130 main beam,FOOK those things could spot a beetle crossing the road at 100yds biggrin.gif!

Timmy you junior LOL!

I had some rally spots on a 2.8Infection Caprice that I swear had shipping changing course off Lands End when I was lighting up the A5 in de Wales...Aiiiiiiiii...ROFLMFAO biggrin.gif

sig.gif

Andy I only fitted 100watt bulbs and the reason one was out was i had removed the earth cable to that side earlier that day to pull a new bonnet pin cable through (alarms)and forgot to reconnect it! eek.gif

The fitting of a new earth cable does reduce the current flow compared to using the loom one(which is poor)and is why in the past experience with failing bulbs (overheat etc) has occured.

Jeff TT

Jeff, where do you get the moisture packs from and where do you locate them in the lamp unit as I 'm going to do that mod soon.

thanks Syko.

Pop in to any shoe shop and ask them, reason I know is my wife used to be a shop manageress and she used to have loads and loads in the box`s that they had to remove before sale you know the little bag type one`s.

When you have the lights apart you will see that there are a few places to tuck them and the more the merrier.

Jeff TT
