How easy is it to fit one of them alloy lightweight pulleys? Anyone know whats involved or a simple howto sheet :)

I got one on my old zed that I wanna put on my new 'un.

Id prefer to do it myself but if its gonna take too long or be too hard Ill pay someone to do it.

Cheers

*EDIT*

1.Done a search and found some bits out - still cant find a fitting guide.

2.Would one of my UK TT bolt straight on to a J-Spec TT with same belts?

3.Is there any way of identifying if my uk one is an unorthodox one?

Although I don't have a fitting guide I do know that it's quite an involved job. You'll need a proper pulley to get the old pulley off and you'll also need new belts as the lengths will now be different with the lightened U/D pulley fitted. You can fit your UK U/D pulley to your JDM.

;) once you get into it, its easier than it seems, just make sure youve got all the tools handy, including pulley puller.

I know every body likes these shiney pulleys .But the reason the standard one is so heavy is because it has a hard rubber inside it this is a harmonic dampener for the crank shaft to ilminate vibration .If a lightweight pulley is fitted to a old engine this may cause big end wear or worse. This pulley may be fine on a freshly rebuilt engine with the crank a flywheel balanced /nissan fitted this pulley for a reason if the wanted to make it light they would have done.

I recently had a very interesting experience with a lightweight pulley regarding this issue.

One of my Zeds developped a rod knock last month and as an experiment I decided to swap the stock pulley for a lightweight one, just to see if there was a difference in balance (less balance: the knock should become more obvious/louder)

The interesting part was that with the leightweight pulley the rod knock was almost gone (you could barely hear it) !!

I drove the car like this for a few days and the knock didn't get worse.

Swapped the stock pulley back on and the knock was back again and as loud as before.

if you take a good look at the rubber harmonic damper core of most (now 14+ year old) stock pulleys, you'll see there's not much left of it anyway.

ok - so its a good thing. . . right? :)

Cant I use my belts from the UK one too or is the JSpec ones different?

its a good thing- although my knowledge is limited, i did a lot of searching before fitting mine, and concensus from people like eric and paul c (who id trust with my car) was that it should cause no long term problems.

afaik uk/jdm doesnt make a difference for the belts but age does?

The belts are the same but might have stretched a bit.

fitted mine last night quite an easy job just make sure the key on the crank is clean and fitted properly, an impact gun is handy for undoing crank bolt if you can get one.

Nissan built this engine with performance in mind .I cant see how a the factory pulley can deteraite over time the rubber is incased in the pulley .This problem come from the 200sx forum ca18det and sr20det lots of cases of big end knock with cheap ebay lightend pulleys.

cheap ebay lightend pulleys.

theres your answer!

sgp or unorthodox from smithy

nah mate - theres always compromise! for a start, they could only hit 280bhp, which they did easily already. the unit had to be de-tuned which is why they run relativly low boost as standard. there was no point in adding other go-faster bits!

there also noisier with a lightened pulley.

In Answer to Jap/UK differences, yes there IS, sold over a 100 of these babies and the jap spec uses a smaller Alternator belt, i've got around 6 of them lying around from where i've had to change it for a UK one, otehr than that the other belts are the same, that said, for how much all 3 are, you may as well fit new.

cheers

I'd say be aware that removing the original front pulley which is a harmonic damper, MAY make your bottom end more prone to failing, depending on how good the original balance is (basically it absorbs vibration caused by imbalance). If used as part of a full build with proper balancing these pulleys are fine

Taken from the sxoc forum.

inline 4's are much more suceptable to this type of thing than a V6. V6's are more balanced with a shorter stronger crank

When looking at high performance engines such as those found in Honda VTEC equipped cars and the S2000, it is obvious that manufacturers do understand the benefits of reducing engine inertia, and have utilized lightweight pulleys to help the power output and responsiveness without the use of a harmonic balancer.

However, this is not the case for all engines, many of them do require the use of the harmonic balancer to prevent failure. Skylines with the RB20, 25 and 26 are a good example of this, which is why we don't make a pulley kit for them. The pulley kits we do make are for engines that do not rely on the balancer to any significant degree. Taken from sxoc

if you buy the unorthadox crank pulley it is as close as poss to the correct balance needed, compared to cheap type

the supra also has a dampner on the pulley itself, and a good quality lightened one is around £250

harmonic dampners are less of an issue on a V6 to a straight 4 or 6, apparently.
