Auto chip in manual car ?

Does anyone know if a JWT auto chip will work in a manual ?

I've got a chance at a 2nd hand ECU, but it's from an auto, so I'm not sure if it'll work or not.

Cheers

AFAIK an Auto will work in a Manual, but not the other way around..

Personally I'd try and get the correct chip though, just in case the fuel maps are different (the Auto's have different cams (I think, certainly in the US) and a different turbos).. You could probably check with Jim Wolf in the states actually..

John,

Are you talking about the whole ECU or just the chip. If it is the chip then which version is it ? e.g. what is printed on the white label ?

Email me if you want to discuss details.

The auto eprom will not work in a manual Z!

I contacted JWT about this a while ago and had to exchange my auto eprom for a manual one.

The manaul eprom fitted in an auto ECU will operate without any problems

That's interesting ....

Why doesn't it work ? Shaunmac has converted his car from an auto to a manual and it works .... Or does it ? He is having a number of problems.

Maybe it's just JWT chips that aren't interchangeable .... Any ideas Steve ?

My car worked fine for months after I did the conversion. The problem is something else.

ok... I take back the 'will not work' as I have been corrected smile.gif

That is interesting though and I would like to say that I have never tried it myself!

I changed from auto to manual and spoke to Jim Wolfe to see if it was necessary to change the eprom. It was necessary to change to ecu doing this way but it cost me $100 exchange for the eprom!

If I remember correctly, JWT said that the mapping is different for ignition timing / fuelling etc etc.

There must be some difference as JWT offer the two alternatives.

Maybe Henry L Hir knows the differences in programming?

The auto has smaller turbos and the torque curve is lower down to help the auto get going. This is reflected in the auto chip.

My Z is now a manual but retains the auto chip (from SE). Works nice.

If you have a manual engine turbos etc, the auto chip will probably not perform as well. But I think it should work. Save up and go for the manual chip IMHO. oh and get an SE chip. (compare the price - you might be pleasantly surprised)
