People,

My internet connection 'appears' to have slowed down, it should be 2.2M but on ADSL speed tests it ranges from between about 660 - 980k, one did actually go as high as 1.1M,

How do I fix this, I don't think it's anything to do with the connection but more my PC, probably crap software that's been installed and no longer needed (i.e. unwanted sh!t that installs itself).

How do I identify, locate and remove all the sh!t

Run some anti spyware and anti virus. Remove all the unwanted crap that has installed itself. Then go to add/remove programs and systematically de-install any software that you donot use or recognise.

Finally, re-install the broadband software that your ISP sent you. Give it a reboot.

Should restore speed.

yep..run antispyware, remove all of your old cookies and temp internet files, defrag and reboot

Contention may be an issue to? is it a noticible slow down at 'popular' times when lots of people on your local loop are using the internet.

Hmm, yes it is but I would say it is incredably slow compared to when I first got the PC and internet connection.

BTW, it's wanadoo 2m + wireless. Have rebooted router several times and it does 'seem' to make a difference but then slows again

blame wanadoo, a popular ISP so it will suffer from contention badly, they won't want to know though, as with all broadband services you are only guaranteed a really slow throughput and anything above that is a bonus.

How long you had wanadoo mate.. is it the wireless + talk live box as there is a recent ish update for the box (apparently ! after a recent dealing with their customer services they told me my live box was shipped with bad software so they sent an update for it..) might be worth a call / email to them... helped speed my connection up

it is possible to speed any broadband acess up, you have to change settings in xp that you dont have access to, like tcp recieve window amounts, selective acks, path mtu etc... there is a test and app online to help you with this, i will get the link for you today. you will need java installed for this test to run.

Bear in mind that the download speed can also depend on the capability/settings of the server you are pulling stuff down from.

Thanks for that PK1, that would be good and I already have java (what ever that does) installed.

Geeky, had it about 3 or 4 months, and it is wireless and talk but don't use the talk. I have checked the update on the ADSL setup page and the firmware is the latest !

does your router have an external power source or does it draw from usb. as some router like us robotics draw a lot of power and if you dont supply them with enough they slow right down. i had the same problem as you and ran the router through an external usb hub with an external powersource. HTH

right, my wireless and talk about the same age, but they must have shipped me abox with the old firmware... how good is your wireless connection? not a virus checker or firewall issue?

Power by external power supply

wireless connection is fine, it's always excellent signal and quality.

The connection speed was well rapid previously but has deteriorated over the last few weeks/month or so.
