Right...

At present, I don't own a ZX, but I have sold my car and am ready to buy one. Now obviously, insurance can be a bitch on things like this so I was wondering if someone could tell me what to look out for when searching for a UK spec ZX??

As far as I am aware, a Fairlady is the import and most TT's are imports. Is that right?

Anyway, basically, I am looking to buy a UK Spec Twin Turbo for UNDER £4k (if possible).

Any help will gratefully appreciated!

Welcome :)

Fairlady is what they were called in Japan, however when advertised for sale they are usually just referred to as 300zx. Dont rely on the Name for determining if its a UK or Import.

Uk cars are TT 2+2 Targa only

Jap can me TT or NA, 2+2 or SWB(2seater),as well as Targa and slicktop for the SWB.

Imports are a lot more popular. Depending on your age, with many insurers there is no difference in cost for Import or UK.

Hello Mate,

I'm no expert to be honest as I ended up buying a car that needed a fair bit of work....however due to this I can advise on some pitfalls!!!!

When I was looking for a zed I noticed that a lot of the UK cars were quite rusty under the sills and indeed was advised by Jeff at zedworld that when he was about to start working on some of these UK cars he had to inform the poor owner that it wasn't worth it due to the amount of corrosion!!!

I think that the situation is that all UK cars are turbos you can only get an N/A as an import.

With regards to insurance my car is a 93' import twin turbo and I got classic limited mileage insurance for only £475 and I'm only in my mid twenties.

My main advice and please heed this is to get the car looked at by someone who knows the zed. My car was lovely to look at but has just cost me another £2500 to get it roadworthy :headvswal

Hope this helps a bit however I'm sure the other members will give you better advice as I'm just learning!!!!

Regards

Rob

Thanks for that.

There seems to be a big difference for me with insurance as I am only 22.

Are there any insurance groups that you could recommend for young import drivers? I've tried confused.com, high performance, alan & alan and Adrian Flux. Still expensive!

So basically I should be looking for something with 2+2 in the title or UK Car?

Actually I bought the car in October and it wont be ready until 20th of Feb...Its done more miles on a trailer than on the road!!!

I've had only 250 miles of pleasure in it!!!

ANYWAY THE POINT IS...GET A PROFFESIONAL FROM THIS FORUM TO LOOK AT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try AON for the insurance bet you'll be ok for an import...helps if you can insure it as a second car though.

Sorry can't find the number try directory enquiries.

Rob

Cheers guys

As far as the classic insurance is concerned, who's that with? I can drive my celica as my main car and the zx as a secondary car.

This company like I said!!! You're situation sounds ideal as you're already insured on your celica. Guarantee you'll find them cheap.

Found the number 01384552731

Good Luck

definalty get someone to look at the car first, ive not had manjor bills but could have saved me the hasstle of a few things..

the sills are fairly common on uk zeds (but zedworld can fit a replacement fairly cheaply).

big thing is dont rush, decent zeds are out there, but even a dog can feel like a good zed if youve not driven one before.. as for insurance im with adrian fluz atm but wont be with them again next year i dont think as heard some horror stories about their payout levels and they are cr*p for admin (even charge to change address...)

best of luck finding a good zed.. (also as for the inspection i would get someone that knows a zed over the AA / RAC services just to be sure plenty of people on here know the car well..)

The important thing is look at as many as you can. There is an awefull lot of neglected sh1te out there. As for UK cars being rustyer etc I can only speek from my own experience and tell you that the worst car I've ever seen for rust was a Jap import and the cleanest I've seen was a black 1990 UK spec car.

It is true that there are a lot of rubbish UK motors but get yourself alone to a local 300zx meet and look at the standard of the cars. You'll soon realise how rubbish most of the cars out there are. If you can get a car from an established member here you'll have a good chance of getting a good one. Have a look at cars for sale and there rides sections

Well thanks for all the help guys.

I'll keep an eye out on Autotrader and eBay, plus I'll check out the for sale section on this site. If anyone comes across anything that sounds decent within my price range, let me know.

I'll keep you posted!

Give Warwick Davis a call on 08717502107. Im 23, licence 4 years, 4 years no claims, one speeding convinction (in a Rover 400!), and it costs me £950 for year fully comp and its still "only" £1050 for the year with me paying monthly (interest). Most, well I beleive all, of the insurers only offer "classic" policies to those over 25. I was with Adrian Flux before. It would have been for this year £1450 before interested and then, wait for it, £1800 after interested for paying monthly AND they charge £25 everytime you change anything on your policy AND thats after youve waited half an hour (no exageration) to speak to anyone. Warwick Davis on the other hand I cant fault. They are cheaper, dont rip you off with interest and they have been really helpful with tempory cover for a cheap runabout whilst my zed is off the road. Reminds me, when you look at a Zed DO NOT buy a zed with a manual under bonnet boost controller (bleed valve) with the standard boost guage inside the car. I beleived the seller when he said it was running 0.8 bar, it was actually running 1.5 bar but had ****ed 1 piston and the other was on the way out too! I was overwhelmed with the cosmetic work thats been done on the car and even when driving it I thought I noticed "slight" running issues (exhuast popping etc) but didnt want there to be a problem. When you buy one DO NOT ignore "slight" running problems because they get worse" and become ****ed engines!

Yes, my engine was well fooked!!! i judged the car on looks and speed alone....which was daft!!

Wish I'd known about this forum before I bought!

Your insurance might be cheap because of the area you live in don't forget! My car is insured in god forsaken Brum!!

Rob

What you will find difficult is insurance companies finding the right car on their system. I am only 21 and pay £1700 (4 years driving, 1 years NCB, 0 points, low crime area) but I phoned round almost every insurance company I found and they were the only one to offer me a sensibleish offer considering this is the only real high performance car Ive had. I dont mind paying it though as it is the only car I pay for (got 2 which are all expenses paid) and I have always wanted one.

You will always have to double check with the insurance companies that they have the right car for you. At the end of the day you dont want invalid insurance cause that just causes too many hassles if anything goes wrong.

But check insurances first before you look at any of the cars, to save you from getting your heart set on one, its a side effect of having this car.

Hope to see you in a Z soon though, amazing cars.
