Hi,

For Uni I have a project in which I need to purchase network equipment and show how it's set up. I need to draw a routing table, but am not sure how to do this.

Can someone please help me with what to put in a routing table?

Cheers,

Chris

Do you already have a network running?

You can produce a routing table by:

open a command prompt Run: cmd

type in: route print

whether or not you have a network up and running this will produce a routing table for all or any active routable connectors on the machine.

Sorry, should have pointed out that it's a fake company, and I won't really be buying the hardware.

Cheers for the help guys!

Ok, I'm still confused. I have only one router, and that is for a VPN. So I have the pc's and servers connected to a switch, and the VPN connected to the same switch. What do I put in the routing table?

Because you only have one router on your network (one exit/entrance point) you'd probably just use a default route

------- ip addr. subnet next hop

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 'exit intf. of router or ip add of next hop (remote) router

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 basically means any traffic that isn't on the local network is sent out the exit.

You then put a route command on the remote router that sends traffic for your network to your router.

The alternative is to use one of the dynamic routing protocols talked about on the link in the post above. With these you advertise the networks connected to the router and the protocol does the rest. This probably wouldn't be used in your situation due to overhead on a low cost router.

Are you using cisco routers or just a windows server that is acting as a router?

I am using a Cisco router. We have been told that financial budget is not a restrictive feature, but will be marked down if we over spec it

did you ever actually go to any classes at uni?

I would suggest you start attending in the future

with all du respect and all that ;-)
