Team,

Whats the best brake upgrade you can do whilst keeping the stock UK wheels.? Can you do the skyline upgrade for instance?

Chris

The brakes at the top of this page claim to be skyline and only 7% more total area than the stock ones, dunno if they're any good or not though :wack:

R32 GTR's are 32mm thickness and ours are 30mm no idea if you can do owt with that as am not that working on brakes all the time, so hopefully some one can answer this, diameter is approx 16mm bigger.

You could just fit decent pads and discs and you'll be better off too :)

I fitted EBC sportline replacement discs (stock size, drilled and grooved) Red stuff pads, goodridge hoses. and fresh fluid. My car still shimmys under hard braking and fades during sporty driving. It has all new bushes and bearings etc. and the discs are not warped.......I want better brakes like the ones on my missus RX8

If i can fit bigger rotors and cast iron calipers off an R32 it should help a lot n'est pas?

Aye the r32 calipers will obvoiusly enable the discs to fit, but tbh, for 450 quid i'll send you a nice new set of the GTR34/33 (324mm) sized discs from DBA wiperslot version, caliper brackets and a set of decent porterfield pads :)

check it out on me website....

cheers

have ebc grooved n drilled discs on mine and they feel not great under braking... have to admit it... just no cash to swap for anything else, they feel warped through the pedal but had them looked at and they are ok, also had calipers free up to see if it helps no change.. accepting it now

will they fit stock wheels? (UK spec wheels)

No, 324mm discs won't fit under 16" rims, you'll need 17".

I went for Skyline wheels, 350Z calipers and discs.

There are other cheaper things you can fit to improve braking,

Braided steel hoses - £50ish

Brake master cylinder brace from Danny - £25 is it?

Swap the brake fluid with something like Castrol Response Super Dot 4 - £10, flushing it properly.

All cheap and well worth doing. Pad selection makes a big difference, some are far better than others so you might find changing your pads improves things.

Check for fluid leaks too. :)

Cheers

Done All those and still crap the car is way underbraked for its performance but I guess thats just the bit of the design that feels 16 years old. So I should not moan. I just came back from a track day with my missus' RX8 and my brakes are crap in comparsion it gave me the hump.

I want my car to look stock as I love 'sleeper' mode so the stock wheels will have to stay and it looks like I need R32 discs and calipers. That is un-less Simthy's R33 / 34 kit fits under stock wheels.?

Thanks for the info guys

pads are black stuff so not great but not cr*p either really... im not convinced how much difference a brake master cylinder brace would make to be honest... the brakes just dont bite enough and when under braking they dont feel smooth...

think i might be heading down the skyline route as i have 18 in wheels to fill... r33/34 discs and then when the cash allows r33/34 calipers i guess...

so heres the question.. will aftermarket r33/r34 type brake stuff fit on a zed easily? Or is it best to try and find a skyline owner that is upgrading and just get his OEM bits? (also whats the going rate for decent discs and calipers front off an r33)

Yep aftermarket kits for the GTR33/34 also fit the Zed. Though be careful as the aftermarket upgrades for these usually involve mega sized discs and even with 18's sosme sizes are not possible.

Mines, the GTR discs wil not fit under stock wheels mate it's 17" minimum required. I still say "decent" discs and pads, new fluid and new lines will improve your braking ;)

What would you say are the best 'decent' discs and pads. I Did goodridge hoses and top quality fluid. My shimmy under braking seems to be the tension rods as all other stuff done and discs are not warped. I hear you supply rose-jointed tension rods?

I have EBC drilled & grooved discs with the latest generation Red-Stuff pads (not the older crap ones) but mine are the older aluminuim calipers. I desperately want to keep the stock wheels.

TBH mate i really do rate the DBA's, I did the research on these through the various skyline forums (worldwide) to find they are very highly rated, in my traders section is the various types and prices.

Whilst the slotted are an excellant disc and well upto the job, personally I favour the 4000 series, cost a fair bit more but for anyone who abuses discs, they really are good ;)

Pad wise, well simply search "porterfield" and you'll see a great responce from Zedders, plus i've sold many to s14 and skyline peeps who were all happy. A more expensive pad is the ferrodo ds2500 which from my experience of using them and porterfields, don't warrant the extra ££ that they cost and especially when kicking of so much dust

hth
