After reading the weight saving thread, im really tempted to take out my spare tyre...

thing is if i just get a few cans of tyreweld is this legal? and also if i do have a flat tyre that the tyreweld stuff wont fix (ie sidewall damage) then will the rac come out witha space saver..? or am i up sh1t creak without a paddle?

Wondering how many other people have gone for this day to day?

I know that a lot of new small cars don't carry a spare at all any more, just a can of tyre foam. However, I don't know how the law affects cars that were originally meant to carry a spare. Anybody?

wont 3 cans of tyre weld wiegh nearly as much as a spare anyway?

I'm sure someone said to me that without a spare tyre the AA/RAC won't come and get you. Might be an idea to check your policy type stuff.

thats what i thought rac wise... maybe just take it out for track type stuff... shame though just been out for a drive without the tyre (to the gym...) and it felt lighter at the back

I removed mine...got a puncture, called AA and they said that Im not covered without a serviceable spare and could only send Tow truck to me....and would be charged.

With me mate the more weight in the back the happier I am, as it keeps the rear wheels on the ground. LOL

same happened to me when i bought the wifes soop

and got a blow out on the way back, i couldnt get the jack under it cos of the body kit

i ended up paying for a recovery wagon cos the bodykit wasn't standard:(

robbing ba$terds non-standard body kit and they charge! whats the point in paying for them... the spare will be going back in then!

I took my space saver out along with jack and any other weight sapping tools (Keep the basics like screwdriver and multi socket set though)... Basic rule of thumb, if your going any long distances then take the Space Saver and Jack with you... If your just doing a general run about then get rid of the extra weight, Makes a difference to acceleration and petrol consumption over a distance!!! And if you do break down locally, get a good mate to go and fetch your space saver for you!! :D

The Missus RX8 came only with a can of miracle foam standard and has been factory lowered so if the AA didn't pick-up I'd be on their ass

When my autobox blew the AA picked it up but only after the first truck that came couldn't do it cause it has been lowered so, i insisted and they brought a flat bed whilst i sat in the pub drowning my sorrows :duffer:

Chris

no spare in mine either!!

just a can of foam, didnt help me much when i recently wrecked all 4 wheels and tyres!! contemplated spraying the foam down my throat LOL!!!

...ran my last Z (NA) for 6 years (daily) without a spare (carried a can of foam), and only had one puncture, and when that happened I still drove home, could hear offending piece of metal tapping on the road with every revolution. Mind you, I carry the spare in my current Z... No logic.

I took out my spare from my Supra TT and then had a flat. Rang the recovery people and they refused to come out ! I was quoted £60+Vat call out and additional £12+Vat per mile in towing charges even though I have a full top whack comprehenive breakdown poilicy which costs me an arm and a leg.

Please keep your spares !

the wording is standard, an rx8 comes with a "tyre repair kit"

so would be covered

if your car carries a spare and is missing you AIN'T covered

they can also refuse to fit a non-legal spare, cost me £70 to get a FLAT bed

to get me home, as it was pissing down, going dark and i was on the motorway, i wasn't going to start argueing the toss, it was £70 well spent

pick the bones out of this lot

WHAT WE WILL NOT COVER

° The cost of any replacement part, tyres, body glass, fuel, lubricants or other fluids, keys, or other materials.

° Any costs for a locksmith, body glass, tyre or other specialist. If we consider that their services are needed, we will seek to arrange this on your behalf, but will not pay for the cost of the call out nor any repair.

° Routine maintenance and non-emergency repairs such as radios, cd players and heated rear windows.

° Any non-essential repairs, damage to paintwork or other cosmetic repairs which do not affect the mobility or security of your vehicle nor render it unsafe to drive.

any additional charges resulting from Your failure to carry a legal and serviceable spare wheel(s) or tyre(s) (except where a spare wheel(s) or tyre(s) are not provided as manufacturers standard equipment). The AA will endeavour to arrange assistance from a third party on Your behalf, but will not pay for the cost of the call-out or any repair;

° Any costs covered under your vehicle's warranty.

Specialist equipment

9. If the AA considers that a locksmith, body-glass or tyre specialist is needed, it will endeavour to arrange their help on Your behalf. The AA will not, however, pay for their services and the contract for repair will be between You and the repairer. Further, if use of a locksmith or other specialist would, in the AA's opinion, mobilise the vehicle, no further service will be available for the breakdown in question. If, in such circumstances and in the reasonable opinion of the AA, the vehicle concerned requires recovery to any such specialist in order to be mobilised and, in the AA's view, to effect such recovery specialist lifting equipment (not normally carried by AA patrols) is required, the AA will arrange the relevant recovery but at Your cost.
