ok guys........heres the story............. every time i take my wheels off i notice that my wheel nuts are loose. i thought it was me going crazy but today i was luckilly only doing 5mph in traffic when i heard a nasty klonk and bang!!! i quickly pulled over (it just so happens it was infront of a police station exit!!)to see and all of my wheel nuts were missing and my brake disc was running on the inside of my wheel.thank god it didnt come off all together as the damage would have been really bad!! the policemen come out to see what was the matter and to ask why i was parked infront of their station when to my amazement they were very nice and said dont worry about it,they'll make the cars go out the onther way!! :wack:

does anyone else have the problem of their wheel nuts working loose or is it just me? :headvswal

hmm, heard about wheel nuts working loose, are they aftermarket or stock, how much thread is there to attach the nut/s to?

check weekly and torque them to approx 85lb,if it happens agaoin it may be the wheel nuts, try a new set perhaps, could of been deadly at high speed :wack:

had this happen to me twice when i put my 18's on and both times was when it had been into a garage to have work done

so i just got me dad to put them on tight for me (he is about 17 stone and is strong as fook lol)

never happened again after that, the thoery i came to (probably wrong) was if they were put in with a windy gun, then maybe they were stretched and somehow became weak

only happened with the front left wheel

i put the stock wheels back on whilst my aftermarket ones are getting refurbed. maybe its because i left the 5mm spacers on? gona take the spacers out and get a new set of wheel nuts i think! i really dont wana spank my zed!

it was the front left wheel with me too! all the others were tight. :(

 thank god!!! i'm not going insane!! for peace of mind i'm changing all the studs and nuts!

I had a wheel come off doing ~20mph off a roundabout in my old zed a few years back, knackered the alloy wheel, the caliper and the wing :(

i've got a groove out of the inside of my wheel and five missing wheel nuts! thats the extent of my damage thank god!!

a lot of garages dont torque the nuts and only do them hand or gun tight, so invest in a torqur wrench buddy for peace of mind, would hate damage on a z for other people stupidity

Just a post script to this. I replaced the offending wheel studs after Jeff gave me the warning and that does seem to have sorted the problem. I suggest everyone should check this from time to time as I only did a few hundred miles between fitting the rear wheel and this problem cropping up (the wheel was correctly torqued up as well). If your zed is a daily driver it could be a problem at any time

Gareth

same here i find the ones on my rear wheels usually comes loose

to the point that a few times the studs break and had to replace

themm..i keep etras just beacse of this.. well what i do i keep

checking them and tighten as soon as i find them loose..

.i have on the same 17inch rims that came with the car..

thinking  of changing them as soon as cash is avail......

...what torque setting are you using to tighten the studs? I ask because I've read (USA site) that the studs should be tightned to about 85lb? (is that the right measure) and I think this is because people believe that over tightned studs warp the disks. Having tried this setting, and being told that it's too loose by tyre fitters, I've found that it is too loose, after a while you can hear the wheel coming loose, and that 100ib? on the torque wrench is far better.

After a garage does work you always have to check your wheel nuts are at the right torque settings 50-100 miles afterwards, something to bear in mind is that if someone attempts to pinch your wheels, they will loosen the wheel nuts and will leave the scene if they are disturbed, leaving you with a potential death trap :(
