I am at my wits end at the moment with my Z. Just before christmas I spent a £1100 getting her serviced and checked over and a new set of stainless pipes fitted and a week before christmas (about 2 weeks after I had her back from southwestz in Bristol) she decided she was having the holiday off too!

Initially I was lead to believe that it was the PTU that was at fault. But I have since tried another PTU (many thanks t-pot for sending me your PTU so I could test it) and it has not changed the fault at all.

The symptoms are irratic idle revs and missfiring with much spluttering and no power. When I got it home I left it on the drive for the night and when I came to start her the next day the engine now just turns over with not so much of a splutter. I believe the fuel tank is pressurising as I can hear the pump when i turn on the ignition and it hisses when the cap is removed and the fuel appears to be going through the engine as there is the smell of fuel in the exhaust pipes when I've tried to start it.

I haven't checked for a spark at the plugs because to be quite honest I have looked at it and I can't see how they come off. Am I being dumb? I realise each plug has its own coil but I am a little hesitant to touch it until I know a little about it and I haven't a manual for the car.

So now its just sat on the drive. I tried the PTU on friday last week and its made no apparent difference to the car. It just turns the engine over and wont fire up. everything else seems to be working ok. I've had a look around and cant see anything obvious and it doesnt appear that any fuses have blown or anything simple like wires come off etc. I'm starting to think about flywheel and cam sensors now but I have no idea about where to start and was hoping someone would of had something similar.

I don't mind taking her to a garage or getting someone from a garage to come out to me I just don't want to get someone who doesn't know what to look for involved like a local garage as it will end up costing a fortune so if there are any local speciallists anyone can recommend or experiance they can share please do! I'm losing my mind over this car!

ive had similar problem for past couple weeks have changed all possible components from fuel pump, cas, ptu etc, best thing is check for spark, fuel, each coilpack has two 10mm bolts undo them and pull coilpack out, also do a search will find alot of info even tho i havnt resolved my problem hth.

Are you near Zedworld (Tamworth). Jeff is always very helpful. He'll probably suggest some things to try over the phone. Dave

I had a very similar problem a few months back. I just cleaned up all the important connectors and reset the ECU, all was fine after that.

Could be the MAF?

ok guys thanks for that I cant believe my bloody luck I've had with this thing. I'll have a word with zedworld. Whats a MAF? Will also have a read of that ECU check thing tomorrow and hopefully something will come of it. My trouble is she's my every day ride and tbh its no good its been off the road more than on since september when I bought her.

Hi Mate, had a good look around your car while it was at Southwestzed's...some very rare abflug arches you have there and similar alloys to mine.

You need to discover if its spark or fuel related.

Remove each coilpack and plug, checking for spark by holding the electrode of plug to an earth while cranking engine.

If one or more cylinders is not getting a spark then it will either be the PTU (which you have ruled out), PTU Harness, Connctors (clean them, they are probably corroded), coilpack, failed plug.

If you have sparks on all 6, then remove the CAS and spin the shaft to see if you can hear all the injectors clicking. Check all injector connectors for corrosion..etc

Common Maf failure sympton is it not wanting to run over 2500-3000rpm

Best of luck

It was at South z, with us im afraid, just thought id put the record straight

disconnect your air flow meter . remove all the plugs and clea nand dry them then try restarting again . if your engine floods she wont clear so you must clean the plug first. once running let her idle for a bit then rev up to 1400 rpm and reconect the maf. then rev to clear her again. then see how she idles . if its the same as when the maf was off then prob not maf fault if it hunts about a bit then prob maf at fault . seen a coouple like this of late and it was the maf's at fault.

Wolfman your location is midlands if you pm me your addy im free tomorrow after 12 mid day if you aint to far i can pop round see if we can sort the prob out at work till 12 in near Redditch

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all the help guys! Finally got the car sorted thanks to Jeff at Zedworld! Top job. Turns out it was the PTU after all it was just that the one that t-pot sent me didn't work either! Must have gotten damaged in the post or something? Either way as well as a couple of other things that just needed tweaking the car is running again so I am over the moon!

Thanks again guys!
