Are HIDs legal and do they get through MOT?

let us know how they are Karl, i just got a full set of 100w zeon bulbs from danny on here, and altho there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with them my dip beam is STILL appaulingly bad, and i HAVE completely spripped, cleaned and realigned the complete headlights, so i've given up for now and will drive with my fogs on (not a lot better) or highbeam (this is better) when i can..

good luck when u go away by the way karl..

update on the HIDs, eddy just txtd me to say he had just tested the HIDs and in his words, "fook me these are bright" so it looks like guys these are a great buy, so if you want the company i got them from, pm me and i will tell you, i dont want to upset the traders buy putting up other companies details up, unless im allowed.

I heard that you need to remove them b4 MOT, is this right guys? I would like to get a set because the standard lights are poo but I don't wanna have to mess about having to replace them every year just for MOT...

why have you got to remove them b4 mot mate all cars today have hids on them

Ive had these fitted for about 2 months now and they'r great.

I took them to a mot station to get aligned and they said nothing about them only what a great improvement they were.

thought so mate, whats the point in buying sumthing if you have to keep taking it off for an MOT all the time.

Cars with HIDs are required by law to have a washing mechanism fitted. AFAIK, your car can fail an MOT if you've fitted HIDs and you have no headlight washers.

But, unless you find an MOT tester who has a magnifying glass and a lot of spare time on his hands, you'll more than likely be ok.

my test centre is spot on (my local nissan garage) im such good mates with them now they dont test everything they need to and they turn a blind eye to sum things aswell. if you can get away with it why dont you.

loads of cars on the road with hid's as standard dont have washer systems, lets face it unless they have a wiper blade they dont work anyway

Think you'll find they aren't. All cars fitted with them from the factory are required to have a headlight cleaner. They all have some kind of jet, most cars have a tab that moves out which you can't see when not being used.

If you look on all the new Mercs, BMWs, even lesser specced cars, such as Lagunas, Astras and such like, there's provision for washer jets.

So what's the definitive answer? Dont wanna get them if I am gonna have issues at MOT time???

As well as washers there's also some rule that HIDs must be fitted with an active self leveling system for new cars fitted with them in UK. I dont think any HID kits have that. So while a zed is a pretty hard sprung car and unlikely to be troubled by ever being overloaded and need self leveling stuff the rules will be such that its technically illegal even if never discovered by a MOT.

There is also the issue that you should tell an insurer that its fitted as it is a modification. Otherwise they are perfectly entitled to renege on a claim if they discover it.

Hi Karl

Got my hid's today, you beat me........!

Are you going to do the headlight conversion first? (hid safe) as if so could do both together.

Found this on an aftermarket HID manufacturer's website:

LEGALITY

NOTES ON ROAD LEGALITY AND QUALITY OF OUR HID :

Both versions of our HID systems are DOT approved, MOT approved and fully E-compliant in all safety, E.M. emmission and performance specifications. As far as we are aware these are the only HID kits on the market that meet all these requirements.

This makes our kits ROAD LEGAL ; there is a lot of misinformation regarding the legality of HID systems fitted to cars without headlamp power wash and rear axle self levelling ...these are only an E.U. legal requirement on Xenon systems fitted to NEW cars AT THE FACTORY PRODUCTION STAGE .

HID systems fitted as aftermarket accessory DO NOT REQUIRE the car to have power wash or self levelling ; even the DOT get this wrong sometimes .... our expensive lawyers did not !

yeah thats right mate, dipped beam is H3 and main beam is H1 i think.

I have had my car MOTd twice at local Nissan dealers since fitting my HID conversion and there have been no problems.

I do have a UK car but lost the headlight washers when I fitted the 99-spec front end (HIDs fitted since then, I hasten to add :D )

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

ok guys this is where i got my HIDs from, ive had loads of members send me pm's asking for details, so here you go, you have ask for RHD (right hand drive) kit ok otherwise you will get an american kit.

karl

I'm surprised it makes a difference - I thought the bulbs were just bulbs and it was the actual headlamps that were designed left or right hand drive

yeah its defo the law to have washers fitted to cars HIDs. they are normally squirted with hot water. when the lense becomes dirty it dramatically changes the pattern of the beam
