In my previous car (200sx s14) everyone raved all the time about swapping out intercoolers, getting big FMIC and uprated wing coolers etc..

doesnt seem to be such a flavour for this on zeds, yet the coolers appear very small to me (smaller than my s14 stock one was i think). Any ideas why that is? and also would a pair of s14 stock wing coolers be better than stock zed ones if your running towards 15 psi

thanks andy

Uprated SMIC or a single large FMIC is a popular and worthwhile upgrade especially when fitting bigger turbo's. Stock coolers are efficient up to about 1bar on stock tub's, but you would'nt really go any higher than that on stock tubs as they start to lose their inefficiency.

The s14 only has one side mount intercooler ?, and is feeding a 4cylinder 2.0 engine with bigger turbo, compared to each zed intercooler feeding a 3cylinder 1.5 litre engine(half the V6) with smaller turbo.

thanks, but from that should i take that a pair for s14 coolers would be an advantage to my zed? Assuming I could get them to fit somewhere..(1bar is 12 or 14 psi :headvswal )

1bar = 14.4psi ;)

If you can get 'em to fit, at face value the S14 coolers should be better than Zed stock ones. Don't have any technical info to confirm this though :confused:

ive got the tech info somewhere on the s14 coolers il dig it out... just thinking cheap way to get an upgrade if they fit..(as lots s14 owners have them lying round after fitting fmic.)

il post anything i find

general rule of thumb with intercoolers: more size/airflow = more power. 200bhp through one is more than 150bhp through one so they should work ok untill 400bhp in theory? how about 200sx turbo's too? whats the differences (apart from one will need to be at 180 degrees)?

not sure its HP really for the cooler more air mass and pressure/flow.

seem to remember the guys were talking of 16 psi max really through the std s14 cooler as it caused leaks in the fittings after that, so you would be looking at 16psi through the coolers =bhp.

as for the s14 turbos think it would be a huge amount of work to get custom fittings (brackets manifolds etc) for not much gain really.. IMHO

The front mounted or side mounted debate rages on forever but what I do know is that the intercooler upgrade does make a difference even on a mild car. I first got a Mine's :bow: light tune ECU mapped for the following spec:- Intake filter upgrade, Boost upgrade, aftermarket exhaust and upgraded intercoolers. I fitted the ECU but didn't do the intercoolers until I found some stillen's on flea bay for dirt cheap. So i have a before and after seat of the pants data set. The mine's ECU got me 13 PSI and performance to match. The real and only difference felt with the intercoolers going on was that they just made the car behave consistently like it was a cool day (denser charge getting through?) and i hence got more performance than with the stock units :D

I think the positioning of the Z intercoolers is as much to do with their efficiency as well. My stillens have been supplemented by Stillen ducts that ram the air into the bigger surface area so you may want to think about that if you are going to upgrade as when you get in there you will see that even if you did have bigger coolers the air would not naturally want to go there.

thanks for the info... see if i can get hold of a cheap s14 cooler and see if it will fit seems a sensible first stage
