Hi guys

Only picked up my 300 on Friday evening so I've had it less than 4 whole days and already the questions are piling up ...

Been on the forums for a while as always wanted a 300 since joining the Z ownership ranks nearly two years ago with a 280 ZX

but have now treated myself to a Twin Turbo and need as much help as I can get

here goes

1) The car has no rear badges at all - and only a Z badge on the front - it has the 300 ZX rear lamp section and 'Fairlady 300 ZX' mats in the front foot wells - I was told it was a 1992 Fairlady Twin Turbo - should it have rear badges - have they just been taken off by a previous owner ?

2) Reversing alarm when autobox is put into Reverse - doesn't matter if you're moving - it still sounds an alarm - damned annoying - told that it's standard practice on imports - can it be safely 'removed' or muted in anyway - just pull out the electrics I suppose - separate fuse maybe ? - Owners manual doesn't even mention it so of no help at all .

3) Cold start high pitched squeeling from under the bonnet - assume belt tension problem - fades after a few minutes and doesn't happen when warmed up restarting after parking - only first thing early morning

4) Seat belts in doors - real lack of seat belt tension on drivers side -very much doubt it would stop me flying forwards if I slammed on the brakes - also the plastic cap that covers the top mounting bolt is missing - can I buy one new from somewhere ?

5) Unleaded Petrol - Seen comments on the forum about Optimax - is standard Unleaded ok and should I be adding a cleaning agent such as Redex to my petrol ?

6) and lastly - for now anyway - the boot edge is covered in very fine cracks under the paint - sure I read somewhere that it's only foam based material and prone to this - so are new boots expensive and are they any better - can it be stopped from getting any worse somehow ?

Thanks for any help in advance - sorry to be so un-informed - got to start somewhere ......

Plan to take the car down to Z-Tech sometime soon for a once over and the Conzult check

hope to meet some of you at the local meets

best wishes

Ian

welcome to the club mate. there's a chap hoering around on ebay that flogs the rear badges. ive purchased from him twice and can vouch for him, even if he posts from america.

um, standard unleaded is ok, as long as you dont start messing about with boost etc. use optimax when youre ready to up the bhp ;)

and the boot problem - very common im afraid. i had a full colour change a couple of months ago and my boot is already starting to bubble again. you can go for an aftermarket spoiler or replace with another lip spoiler made from better stuff. take a look at the ZCentre for different bodykits (member on here)

good luck

Talking of boost - I don't have a Turbo Boost meter reading thingy under my speedo dial - think I read somewhere that not all TT imports had them

My speedo dial has had the MPH conversion done so maybe that's why - assume the face plates must just be different

Not going to be playing with any BHP type mods or stuff yet - just enjoying the car for what it is for now !!

Sure it's a TT? has it got the extra big diameter pipes at the front?

Probably has but worth checking!

Have to go and take another look in the morning - stuck at work right now and security may think me odd if I start poking about under my bonnet in the staff car park at 2 thirth in the morning

Extra big diameter pipes ?? - Extra big compared to what ? - This is my first 300 remember so unless it has 'extra big diameter pipes' written on them I wouldn't be any the wiser .....

Going to the Jap owners meet in Reading on Thursday night so bound to have to pop the bonnet and let others look so will ask a few questions then - even if I do have to wear a 'newbie' badge for a while

Very unlikely you've got a NA that should be a TT - just a wild guess!

By extra pipes I mean two on each side coming forward from the engine to the radiator area - two on each side so four in total - lol confusing - best look at a pic of a tt or na under bonnet - I bet yours is a TT like you expect.

He means does it have these two pipes? It may have a 'Twin Turbo' badge like in the picture? If not it may not be a TT mate, I hope I'm wrong though.

Thanks for the picture - waiting til daylight and my shift end and I'll be checking that we match up - although not as clean as yours - Yet

TT vs NA - still both beautiful cars on the outside - is it just the power differences that make the TT more popular - would guess that N/A may be cheaper to maintain

Production wise were there more TT's than N/A's then - as most of what I see and read on the forum is TT based

one of the later models didn't have a boost gauge, although i cant remember which year. yours is a '92, but if i remember correctly it was the '94 that didnt have the gauge (open to corrections guys). as craig david says, best way to find out is pop the hood and see how many pipes you have. the front bumper will tell you which model it is - TT's have vents in the front corners where the intercoolers are, NA's just have a plain bumper without vents.

TTs are definately more popular (there's a recent poll knocking around somewhere), mainly due to power and partly because there were more of them made. Having said that the NA owners on here seem quite happy with their machines, especially the lower maintenance :headvswal

Thnaks for the help guys

Should have seen the clues

No Air vents in front spoiler

No badges

No boost gauge

and most importantly of all - no double pipes at the front - and no Twin Turbo sticker under the bonnet !!

But I did say I was new to all this - it's a rapid learning curve

I've bought an N/A !! - is it still a 'Fairlady' though ? - how will I ever know ?

It's not a problem - I luv it anyway - only 3 days of short journey driving and I'm hooked regardless of what's under the bonnet and from what I read it may even be slightly cheaper to run (mpg wise) and slightly less to maintain (turbo - less wise)

Doubt the insurance will be any cheaper - but going to ring and find out just in case

Still going to have lots of NA related questions for you all ,

regards

Ian

PS - Don't think I was in any way mis-led by the previous owner - in fairness he only said it was a 300 ZX Fairlady import - it was me who wrongly assumed it was a twin turbo - I thought they all were ....DOH

PPS - I've got one of those weird front bumper parking aid thingies on the front as well !!

Glad that's all sorted anyway and at least your happy thats the main thing. The N/A 300's tend to be less mantainence and less grief to be honest. Welcome to the club mate

Hi Ian - no disgrace in an N/A bud. Many owners prefer them to the TT ;)

There should be a few of us at the Reading meet on Thursday. What colour is your car - we'll keep an eye out for you! Either that or take a note of my mobby number (in Contact Details thread in the SE Events section)

See you there!
