Just having a browse through some specs for some fast new metal and comparing them to the zed.

Right, the zed is getting on a bit in years although its performance is still considered good compared to current fast cars. But I wonder how long this will last?

IE, when the M3 originally came out in E30 guise, it came with a 2.2 16v 195bhp engine being replaced with a 235bhp 2.5

Then it was considered almost a semi super car....the Astra VXR has more power now which is a decent 'hot hatch', something that was given to the rather 'slow' MK1 Golf GTi. So is the old M3 still that good?

Looking on a bit further, the current M3 has around 350bhp. The new one I'll suspect having close to 400bhp (and darn right hideous)....but is the M3 considered a super car or is it considered a GT? The Zed originally was classed as Japan's first supercar, but now it's considered a GT?

The new Saab V6 turbo / Vectra VXR share a new 3.2 V6 turbo unit producing 250bhp. Although still short of the zed, as with a lot of things Vauxhall, tuning accessories will have it close to 300bhp fairly easily and relatively quicly.

Does the Zed just then become an old Japanise coupe? I'd like to think that cars also hold status and thus, newer more powerful 'lesser' cars will not have this status.

..........just thoughts for the day........

None of the cars you mentioned there are supercars, never have and never will.

300 ZX has always been marketed as a GT - to compete with the Corvette, Supra etc. The only Japanese supercar that can be bought from a dealership was the Honda NSX, it shared virtually all manufacturing and design aspects that you see in a Ferrari. Hand built, hand crafted, advanced materials, mid-engine RWD car.

The ZX, Supra, Vette, 911 were production line assembled coupes built down to a price.

I know that none of the above are supercars. I'm comparing figures to cars that have supercar performance.

The 300ZX was heralded as Japan's first supercar.

What actually determins a supercar? Price tag? Peformance? Styling? Combination?

Cool, technically, a Ferrari 355 is no longer a super car!! hehe

I am sure it is a combination of many things. Price tag normally reflects the workmanship, materials and limited production, so supercars would always be expensive.

Performance is pretty much relative to other cars on the road at the time. Yes, we have hot hatches and, saloons and coupes that are as quick or even quicker than Supercars built 20-30 years ago, but the styling, production methods and volume of production, drivetrain layout of modern cars isn't anything like what people perceive as a supercar in the past nor present.

An extream example is a bike would out accelerate a "supercar" like a Ferrari F355, it has atleast supercar peformance, but a bike still a 2 wheeled vehicle.

another original post by si :headvswal :headvswal who gives a shite i certainly dont lol

Well f*ck off then!

Close the door on your way out.

Its the media that decide what is and is'nt a supercar, as the word "supercar" is merely a media invented term. The 300zx was named Japan's first Supercar by the Media. However I'd say a more correct term would be "Super sports".

Corvette and 944T. Not the Supra as the Mk4 did'nt exist and the Mk3 was off no competition whatsoever.

No, you're selecting the opinion of one or two journalists as some canonical proof that the 300 zx is a supercar.

There is nothing about a 300ZX that indicates its a supercar, nothing. Not even 280 brake in a 1600 kg steel pressed body would help it.

Analyse the common design cues, useage of materials, relative performance, styling and construction methods to define what car suits what genre.

MK3 Supra was no competition? It seemed to outperform and out class the Z31 300ZX. It's just that Nissan did a good job and built a good GT to justify the extra outlay, and so they should, considering that the MK3 Supra was 5 years old when the Z32 was launched.

Christ Anh your not the same Anh from the mk3 forum are you lol

this is gonna be fun???

Hi, yes it is. Who are you by the way?

The nissan 300zx TT is in my opinion a supercar. It will out perform most of the supercars on that list and is better equipt. Just because it was produced to appeal to the more affordable market dosent take away the fact that it is a high performance sports car which if you think about it makes it a "supercar"

Hi to Anh and 300zxtt-targa...... N1554N here.

i would have though as the Z won the Rolex 24hr in Daytona in 1994, that would have given it supercar status?.. **** what anyone thinks .. mines a supercar .. wouldnt swap it for a porsche anyday lol

Correct, No competition. Not a thought was given to it, they only ever had the 944t for the European market and the Corvette in mind as the cars to surpass. The less said about the Z31 the better ;)

Its craig, (Supra89) of the mk3 forum and hi NI55AN we need to do a mini meet sometime soon?? I know a couple of nice pubs!!!

Right. Well I'm not going to try and convince a 300zx driver that a cheaper MK3 Supra can do about anything the ZX can. Hey at least the Supra has an LSD as standard

The 4th Generation Corvette through its entire life span was a mess. Only the later expensive Z51 and the very expensive ZR1 packages had the facelifted interior and extra horsepower. The rest were underpowered, had very poor build quality, boulevard cruisers built to a price.
