my mate has been looking for a turbo car which would be good looking and cheap to maintain.

ive mentioned the calibra turbo 4x4 as i used to have one but he also likes the look of the front wheel rover 220 turbo

so i have put up a poll to assist him in which is better overall.

iirc the calibra/cavalier turbo's used to twist

the chassis as it couldn't cope with the power.

Have no idea where you got that hilarious peice of information!

They are only 200bhp and have 4x4

u could get a awesome s13 for that price and itd piss all over both. plus calibra turbo gear boxes if im right are 6 speed, different to N/A calibras so **** that up and your be paying a lot of money. and s13s are the best drift car in the world, but hey each to there own i guess!

F28 6 speed boxes are no more complex than the N/A F20 and F16. It's just the TX box that can go faulty. The gearboxes are pretty decent.

S13's IMHO are very bland, S14s are lovely though.

....I'd sooner have a Cavalier Turbo than a Calibra Turbo. Mechanically identical but the Cavalier is a real sleeper.

Good ones are actually a very nice drive.

I have owned both and had no problems with either 3 years calibra and 18 months Rover. I liked both cars but I think the Rover felt more fun to drive

when you were Hammering it.

Peach, I had a Tomcat before the Zed, nice car for what it is, dont think I could have one as a main car again though. Was bloody quick for a FWD car, surprised many a BMW driver....obviously the zeds in a diff class....

The 6 speed box is crap on the Calibra, they break for fun.

I wouldn't have a Rover I'm sad to say even though it is British :(

Give me an S13 200SX any day of the week

Nope, as I've said, the F28's are good, it's the TX boxes that need to be kept an eye on. They only bust because people don't replace the fluid and don't follow manufacurers guidelines with respect to tyres, lower their car too excess or fit stupid wheels.

si is right i only had 1 problem with mines in 2 years and that was the tx box. and if u fit a transfer switch u can convert it to fwd at a flick of a button which will save fuel or flick it the other way and u have 4wheel drive.

Yeah, it's not difficult to make the TX box switchable. You need to keep an eye on the tyres even more so then as you'll be getting less rear tyre wear. You need to keep the tyres all the same size and wear rating.

Someone was mentioning Rover dashboards being nicer than Calibras....I think not! Whilst neither are sterling peices of design, the Rover dash is a hateful creation.

Also with the Calibra, you get inboard computer and heater leather.

Tell him to get a pre-94 Celica GT4. If he's looking for something thats going to be cheap to maintain I don't know why he's looking at English cars.

Calibra Turbo is actually German, it's build and designed there ;)

Agree GT-4s are far superior.

LMFAO :D

The Calibra is a Chav-a-lier FFS! Oh and what someone said before about the chassis' twisting because of the power is right. Rover 620 Turbo's have the same problem. ;)

Cheap to maintain? Yeah if nowt goes wrong with it!

Gearbox and engine have to be dropped/taken out to replace a clutch, fuel consumption is cack coz of 4wd so not exactly the most economical motor to run. LOL :D

tbh i think he'll be lucky to find a calibre turbo....they seem quite rare........id go a fiat coupe myself........my mate used to have a montego turbo.......in its day it was very quick.....

has he thought of the calibra v6. i had this before the zed (and i know the guy who got it off me hasnt spent much on it in 3 yrs).

i thought it sounded good, IMO they look good in the right colour (not that sick turquoise/green/bogey color), i had a dark metallic green with black leather, and they go ok (slow against a zed but even so!).

no 4x4 to worry about breaking as this is supposed to be common on them, and of course no turbo probs. IIRC the v6 calibra isnt supposed to be far behind the turbo anyway.

HTH - gaz!

I'd go for a Nissan 200SX over either.

Ditto really......

.....although of the 2 in the poll, it has to be the Calibra. Better build quality and it's got the 4x4 grip. Rover is fwd and handles poorly in comparison to just about anything......

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

twisting because of the power is right.;)

Not at all, biggest load of crap I've ever heard IMHO. I've driven plenty of Cavalibra Turbos to know that these don't bend and buckle either.

Friend of mine has an Astra GTE with a C20LET in it and it has no problems with the chassis and it doesn't even have a sub frame. Yeah it's mad and struggles to put the power down, but to twist the chassis??? Go and pull the other one!

Yeah it's based on the Cavalier, but the Cavalier although still a piss poor mass produced rep-mobile is far better built and has much better mechanicals than ANY Rover shite.

Meastro Turbos are about 40bhp down....if you can even find one that hasn't turned back into the ferrous ore from wence it came!

FC RX-7 - ok a bit chest wig and medalion but great fun and quick...!

MR2 Turbo - Probably not ideal if the intended driver has a history of bending cars...

S13 - as already recommended - i second that...

Fiat Coupe - Grat drive... Just built by Blue Peter presenters out of bog rolls and sticky back plastic!

Imprezza Turbo 2000 isn't crippling on insurance either.

All of the above would be a better choice than the 2 in the pole. at least they come from the right country (except the Fiat and Subaru obviously)!!!

Sorry, I'd sooner have have a Calibra Turbo than a Fiat Coupe....about as reliable as a politician's word and no quicker than Calibras.

2 friends of mine have them. a 20V T and a 16v T. Whilst being reasonable cars, between them, they've gotten through 8 engines....which I swear are made from chocolate.

Imprezza is more of a chav wagon than Cavalibras, although have far superior mechanicals.

I have never and well never see people's fascination for the S13. They are more bland than Toyota Paseos. Although I guess it's their cheap drift wagon status that gives them their appeal.
