what do you guyz think about bypassing it-whats the pros and cons????

IMO Bypass it, and if you ever have the engine out change it then.

Pro's - It costs about 5p and takes 5mins, and returns car to correct peformance (have seen losses of 100bhp with the car in safety mode on a dyno)

Cons - ECU can no longer detect det. However you have to bear in mind that it only works below 3000rpm and after that the engine is too noisy for it to hear dett. If your not running stupid boost, and the car is running right, and you use high octane fuel you should'nt ever get det anyway..and if you did, you should be able to hear it.

mines 3,

Ah ha, I had the 'Dreaded CODE34' :headvswal Sunday and yesterday. I thought SH!T £ £ £ £ £.

So I reset the ECU and retested no change, still CODE34. Cleaned DET sensor connectors, no change.

Thought, right, lets look at this properly. Checked the DET sensor with multimeter got about 1.2Mohm accross it to GND, thats fine. Checked wiring to ECU with multimeter accross the two pins and go 500Kohm, thats fine. Cleaned connector again and applied a little silicone grease to protect it from water. My connector is all cracked and will not latch together properly so I had to hold the connector together with a cable tie. Reset ECU again for an hour and a half. Ran the car for 1 minute, switched off, turned ignition on, did ECU test and got,

oh yes

CODE 55. :hyper: Sorted.

Try the above and see what happens guys.

Paul,

Check it again after a ride. I've often seen ECU codes reset to 55 after a fiddle with a connector or wire. However, there could be a break in the wire which manifests itself every once in a while. Worth a check mate.

Cheers for that Dan, I re-checked again this morning when I got to work, still got 55. Will re-check again daily for the next few days.

Does the ECU store code 34 if it detects DET sensor circuit fault even after switch off and on again, does the ECU store this fault even if it sorts itself ?

The ECU will store all faults for up to 50 "starts" - a bit awkward but that's what it does. Once the ECU has been reset you start with a clean slate with "start 1". If you look at a ConZult readout of the fault codes you'll see things like:

"Code 34 - 7 starts ago"

"Code 14 - 2 starts ago"

etc.

Dan

Danny,

I have just done another ECU check and got 55.

Does that mean that I have no faults and the ECU has not detected any faults since the reset ?

Also, how long does it take for the ECU to re-learn all parameters and get back to optimum performance ?

Hi Paul,

Looks like you may be ok then ... but I would keep checking it every now and again.

As for the ECU relearning the parameters, that's an ongoing process and depends entirely on the type of driving that you do (ie, mainly motorway or a mixture of motorway and town driving, etc). I would normally say that the majority of the parameters have been "relearned" within about 20 miles. Relearning is actually a misleading term. What actually happens is the ECU is looking for the most appropriate settings given your type of driving. This in turn is dictated by the mappings on the eprom.
