Gents,

I am off to see a Black Z reg G356 PWT this afternoon.

It is modded quite heavily and so I wondered if any of you knew of the car and could give me some of its history?

link?

Looks ok from the pics but the owner hasnt got a clue about what he's on about. Take someone who knows Z's with you or you could end up buying a lemon.

looks clean but wouldnt have thought 400bhp?

be nice to have some more pics

traction control is a good call! nice to see uprated suspension and clutch rather than all on engine.

as chris says, see if anyone local can go with you

my 2p worth anyway!

Things it certainly wont have.......

Adjustable seats / Electrically adjustable seats (the drivers seat maybe adjustable)

Adjustable steering column/wheel

Body kit (tatally stock body on that)

Things that worry me on the ad.........

JWT ECU,Super Chipped (so which is it, JWT or Superchip)

Although the car looks standard from the outside don't let that fool you! (Body kit???)

This 350 zx Twin Turbo is a rare manual (Damb right its rare, it was never made)

Full race exhaust (id imagine its a catback uprated exhaust

Full race suspension (Check to see what these are)

Performance upgraded Clutch (You cant tell unless he has a recept or photographic proof!

Read the buyers guide...... http://www.300zx.co.uk/tech/BuyingZ.htm before going to look at this Z

As Chris says, try and get a local guy who knows Z's well to accompany you to viewing a Z!

Good luck

Rich

Polished manifold and JWT ECU with a Superchip made me chuckle :D

I think we all might be a bit to late with our advice, as its now the afternoon. Lets hope he does not do what a lot of people do and get so loved up with the appearance of it he says he will take it, without a person who knows Zs looking it over first. Its what I did and spent a lot of money putting it right, but its excellent now and FOR SALE (free plug)

Not there yet, very impressed with the speed of your response. I will not come away with it today, if I come back and ask my questions on this thread perhaps you would help as I dont have anyone to go with me.

The 1992 for sale, I cant use the link, is it in the forsale section here?

The standard boost guage on this model is + or - 7 psi, the buying guide uses a 14 + or - guage, is this usual? Does the needle position translate accross i.e so long as its low down at idle and moves thru its range with power on.

Where the throttle cable ? is visible under the bonnet, mid engine there is a one pulley without a cable right next to it. Is this normal?

How much rear wheel side to side play should be expected from the rear steer?

The engine seems fluffy at low rpm like the timing at that end of the rev range is slightly out. Does any one have experience of this? Can it be adjusted? Bad plugs maybe? I know could be one of many things but I guess what I realy need to know is if its a symptom of something major.

How much to have a timing belt replaced? Can a fairly handy spanner twister do it themselves?

Super Megaphone exhaust, any comments?

note: Oil guage is in Kg/cm2 guide is psi.

Any information much appreciated.

Rob

The differences in the oil guage/boost guage is because it's a Japanese Import and not a UK car. Super Megaphone was made by Apexi. Quite old from what I know of and I had a pair but never fitted it sooo no idea if they are any good or not.

o.k i,ll do what bits i can, 1 the stock psi guage is worthless really so having an aftermarket one will be more accurate

2 the pulley not used on left when lookin in bonnet (dont ask me why)

3 rear steer or HICAS as it is known is only 6% on full lock you have to look really hard to actually see it move so answer, not a lot.

4 FLUFFY hmm well not a great description but if it seems burbly it could be about 100 things but if it has an aftermarket filter it might idle a little bit burbly but the only way is to get a fellow zedder to listen to the engine, thats about as far as i can go without writing 6 pages !!

5 I wouldnt really attempt a cam belt change myself but some people have done i,m of the opinion if it needs changing get a proffesional and there are lots of people who specialise on this site.

6 super meg exhaust sounds like it came off a fiesta !!! oops Apexi sorry

7 Oil guage yes thats right at least my car has that (jap import tt) and i believe all of them are this.

Hope this helps a little ;) ;)

the differant readings on boost gauges oil gauges, are because uk models use psi and imports use kg/cm so either way, there both the same just differant measurements.

in the centre next to the throttle cable is used for the cruise control,as your looking at a manual most do not have cruise control, autos tend to have this

dont understand what you mean by play at the rear, are you reffering to the hicas 4 wheel steer or just general wear?

i had a megaphone exhaust ws a nice exhaust not to loud, but still sounded ok!check it hasnt rusted though :smw:

cambelt is a fairly big job for anyone but if your a compentent mechanic then go for it,also recomended to be done at the same time is,water pump, tensioner, thermostat, water hoses, aux belts, have a look in the traders section there are a few traders in there z-tech being one of them ;) who can do general servicing and engine rebuilds

my uk manual has crusie (although never been used)

the play he may mean is a question i asked when i bought my zed as a novice

"if it is four wheel steering then why dont the back wheels turn when i turn the front ones with the steering wheel" complete novice i was

trebor if this is what you were refering to then i will have a go at answering that

i think it only turns the rear wheels (very slightly) when the speed sensor determines what speed you are doing and how hard you are conering, so you wont see it whilst standing still and turning the steering wheel

As i said MOST manuals dont have cruise, but as it was to answer the mans question the reason there is no cable on the linkage is cruise control cable is connected there!

and the actual turn on the 4 wheel steer is 1 degree so you wouldnt see it,and 15year old worn hicas arms, bushes it may not work very well anyway.

wasnt having a go at you, just trying to shed some light on the mans situation

Thanks,

The play.

Jack the rear end and grab the wheel as if checking for bearing wear. This one has a couple of thou movement across the horizontal axis. I am not overly worried and have put it down to play in the HICAS mechanism but I thought it wise to ask.

What is the performance difference between an N/A and a TT? I believe its about 50bhp but what does it equate to in 0-60 times?

depends where you read it NA APPROX 0-60 6.8 SEC

TT 0-60 5.5SEC with some mods its possible to see low 5s

There was another question I meant to ask.

After idling for approx 5mins the engine revs momentarily died and then cut back in, a small amount of water spat from both exhausts. No more hiccups or water followed. It hadnt run for a little while, Im thinking condensation and perhaps a temporary small airlock in the fuel system but thought I would run it past everyone here in case it rings bells.

What is the performance difference between an N/A and a TT? I believe its about 50bhp but what does it equate to in 0-60 times?

Non Turbo (Jap only)

222 bhp

198 Ib/ft

0-60 : 7.0 secs

0-100 : 18.6 secs

Top speed : 140 mph (restricted to 112mph)

Twin Turbo (Euro and Jap)

280 bhp - 300bhp

283 Ib/ft

0-60 : 5.5 secs

0-100 : 14.5 secs

1/4 Mile : 13.8 - 14.2 secs

Top speed : 170 mph + (Uk restricted to 155mph and Jap to 112mph)

Although, Car and Driver in 1992 got the following figures from a SWB TT :

0-60 mph: 5.0 sec.

0-100: 13.1 sec.

Quarter Mile Time: 13.7 sec.

Peak bhp difference is about 60-80bhp and peak torque is around 85 ib/ft difference. Although peak power does'nt fully explain the difference in power throughout the entire range.

I have an TT Manual and an NA Manual and they are very different cars to drive in the way they perform.
