Detonation is when you get an inconsistancy with the air fuel mix i.g if your running to much boost and not enough fuel then the mixture will be too lean and in worst cases not combust in your cylinders causing holes to appear then bang!!

Oh right just because my det sensor has gone,

hopefully when zen garage has my car they will be able to have a proper look over it and tell me what bits and bobs i need. hopefully it'll be ok, well im really hoping that it is anyway!!!

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

not totally true.

Detonation is a by product of crap air/fuel mixture, also called pre-ignition but this is also slightly different.

If you run lean, ie not enough fuel for the ammount of air then it burns hot. If you burn hot, then the chamber gets hot and you may get hot spots in the chamber. What happens when these get too hot is the air/fuel mix will ignite before the spark plug, well err sparks meaning you get an uncontrolled burning in the chamber... not good at all. This is known as pre ignition.

Now when you get multiple hotspots and pre-ignition in different areas of the chamber then all the shockwaves from the multiple ignitions collide with a huge explosive force causing very high pressure in the chamber producing a knocking noise. ( more akin to a load of bolts in a biscuit tin rather than a knock). Thsi is detonation. These huge shockwaves tend to destroy pistons. also not good.

So how do you combat this possible det' and make sure everything is running right then??

As I understand it fuel is the key If your on high boost then you need higher octane juice. I'm still on a learning curve don't mind me :D

Primarily make sure you dont run lean, ie get it mapped properly so that for any given load at any given revs that youve got enough fuel going into the engine.

You can also lower the air intake temps by fitting bigger intercoolers, or a charge cooler, or even water injection.

did you try changing the plugs and servicing your car like we told you, you could save a lot of money by spending a little

No not yet because the wekk later the car went pop.

Still dont know if its just the gearbox or anything worse also.

Pop up and have a listen to the engine if you like and see if you know any more than me.

Once i get it back from zen garage with the new gear box im going to get all the spark plugs and fuel lines done, i have a friend who is a mechanic who will service it for me.

What you up to tonight around 6ish?

well i finish at 5.30 but i have to get the bus :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal
