Thanks to Zedtech! + Confirmation I need a Winter Runabout?

Had to drive from Lands-end to Heathrow to pick the missus up on Thursday after her trip to the states. Obviously it was pi*sing down the whole way. I've got a HKS (sponge type) filter on the car and the car kangaroos in driving rain if I put my foot down, so I always go easy in the rain. I got to the M4 near Bath and the car lost all power and conked out (tech term). I could start her up but she wouldn't rev above 2k and stalled again within 15-20secs. I've been expecting trouble with the sponge filter and the MAF but didn't know what the symptoms would be. I spoke to a few people whos' numbers I had at 0830hrs (really sorry about that guys!!), and three people suggested the PTU. I then spoke to Ryan down at Zedtech and he immediatly said it was the MAF gone due to the filter, and told me to disconnect the MAF to get me running again. Weehee! I took the plug off the MAF and the car ran fine although limited to 2000 revs. By a stroke of luck I was fairly near to Zedtech so drove at 30mph 20miles down the motorway (! emotional, I was getting overtaken by arctics!) and into Ryans. Greg and Ryan changed the MAF in about 10mins and gave me a cup of tea to defrost my cold hands. I was chuffed to be back on the road so quickly. Its the first time something has gone wrong on this car since I got it 5mths ago so my heart was jumping plus it was the worst time as I was supposed to be in Heathrow for the Lady. Anyway massive thanks to Ryan and the guys at Zedtech, Ryan is a Zed guru! and big sorry to the guys I was phoning at 8am, hope I didn't wake anyone. Dave

ps - new filter on the way!

never nice when that happens. Even with a new filter you need to work out why it's getting wet. Recently had mine do this after removing the front bumper for some work. It didn't go on quite the same so water was getting past the nose panel - first time in 2 years!

Fixed it with a little splash shield under the nose panel, HTH.

Its been on the car for quite some time. There's no splash panel + I've been driving long distance in very bad weather and floods. Not good, but I've had no choice since my other car died. Anyone got any pictures of what splash panels they've made? Have you just made a front screen or covered it right around or what?

Glad you got it sorted mate. Felt for you when you called me. Weather was bloody awful.

Lol, yeah I was blo*dy freezing and there's no heating in the car anyhow so it gets pretty nippy on long journeys, especially when I have to use the fan to de-mist the windows. Thanks for those numbers.Dave

Scenario 1.

Long journey on a horrible cold wet rainy day. you're MAF gives up the ghost but you don't know it's you're MAF . so you're sitting there on the motorway with a spluttery zed, feeling of dread and starting to get chest pains.

You're miles and miles from everywhere. People go by and offer help but the look on you're face says it all. Towtrucks, garages who only know how to service fiat punto's. it's a fooking nightmare.

Scenario 2.

Long journey on a horrible cold wet rainy day. you're MAF gives up the ghost but you don't know it's you're MAF ........BUT

you're name is Royal. you're MAF gives up within 20 miles of Z-tech and with a couple of phone calls you're drinking hot tea with Zed specialists sorting you out with a smile.

DO YOU'RE LOTTERY NUMBERS THIS WEEK

I must have mounted my HKS Filter differently to anybody elses as I can belt it hell for leather in rainy weather and my car performs excellently, I also have no splash guard  I am really impressed with my HKS filter and will not swao it for anything. Maybe I am just a lucky fooker.

Maybe because of the different front, mines a 99 spec so has open mouth and the filter sits just behind. I've got a HKS filter for sale if anyone wants it! Its been great through the summer and autumn and has been on there for several years I believe but I don't think the car has ever been used in the winter before. Its extremely clean underneath.
