In just got my car back from its first service since i bought it 3 months ago, according to the garage the previous owner had pulled off a vacuum pipe from the clutch (from the servo-assist) and bunged up the end... the garage has un-bunged it & put it back on & the clutch is now much lighter. Now for my question: Any guesses as for what reason the previous owner might have removed it? We can't figure out what improvement it would make? It just makes the clutch feel heavier....

maybe he disconnected the pipe because there was/is a leak in one of the small vacuum tanks or in the clutch booster.

...or he just preffered a more heavy/firm clutch feel

Mine's disconnected due to a leaking clutch booster. A garage helpfully re-connected it saying there was nothing wrong with it, and it was ok for a couple of days before it started leaking again. So when I've scraped some pennies together I'll get it sorted out!

Keep an eye on your revs at idle- if it goes up to 1500rpm or so and it wasn't before then chances are you have a vacuum leak.

same story here - leaking clutch booster diaphragm on mine. You can hear the hiss change tone when the pedal is depressed. So disconnected it. Have you seen the price of a new one!! lol - I'd rather have the left-leg work-out when stuck in traffic!

surely if the clutch booster just makes it easier to push the pedal you just wouldnt bother? & why take the pipe off? What advantage does that have over just leaving it fuc*ked?

The reason to remove te vac pipe is, due to pressure leak the clutch can

become depressed slightly and cause slip
