just fitted a oil pressure guage and at idle it sits at about 30psi... but when i boot it it swings right upto 80 ish! is this normal?

Sure is mate......

......more revs mean the oil pump is pumping oil round the engine faster, therefore more pressure to keep the engine fully lubed under load.

Readings will depend on oil temperature - at full operating temp the reading should be around 15psi IIRC, whereas when booting it the reading should shoot up to between 60 and 120 psi.

Sounds like your engine is fine mate ;)
