Hesitation problem still not fixed!!

The problem is that when the car is warming up, it runs like S***! It has very little power & hesitates too. Also the tickover is rough.

I know that the plugs, coils, wiring, air hoses, temperature sensor, fuel pump, pump voltage regulator, pressure regulator are all OK.

The only other things I can think of are the air flow meter & the transistor module for the ignition.

The problem is quite erratic & if I rev the nuts off the engine in frustration, it seems to sort itself out!! but only when warm!

Has anyone had similar problems?

If so, please please please help cos the car is seriously p****g me off now!

Hiya mate!

I've seen several Zeds with similar symptoms and mine has suffered from it in the past as well. What I found - and this may not be the case for you - was that one or more fuel hoses was leaking when the engine was cold. When the engine heats up the hoses expand and 'fit' tighter, which means the problem sorts itself out seemingly. So, arm yourself with a Philips head screwdriver, pop the bonnet and tighten every jubilee clip in sight. There are a couple of fuel hoses that are hidden under the central panel and one that is obscured by the throttle assembly. Again, this may not be your problem but it's worth checking out. Having said all this, it is worth noting that you probably would have smelled petrol fumes by now if you have a fuel hose leakage.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Cheers,

Danny

PS - try the following: start the engine from cold and quickly have a look under the bonnet to see if you can actually see any 'wet' hoses = fuel leakage.

Possibility of a dodgy injector now. It may well be firing fine but is it delivering the fuel it should be? Trouble is, to check the injectors they need to come out to be flow tested. This isn't a quick job!!! Involves removing the plenum at least as far as I can remember...

CheerZ,

Andy

check the connectors on the powertransistor, ign.coils and injectors.

Just wiggle the connectors as soon as the problem occurs and see if you can trace it that way.

Thanks guys for the advice. I'll check for fuel leaks.

I've checked the transistor module connections as well as the cam angle sensor connector & they're all fine (ie, no green crap on there).

I had thought that there could have been a dodgy coil or injector but it seems to be missing on more than one cylinder, the car will stall completely & only sounds like it's running on 4 or 3!

The only other thing I can thing of is that an injector is leaking & filling 1 side of the inlet manifold with fuel! but then again, it would still only misfire on 1 cyl!

I've noticed that the cat temp light comes on sometimes so there's obviously unburnt fuel getting through to the cats which is causing them to overheat!

Hmmm.... From what you've said I'm thinking spark related..

Perhaps your PTU is dieing (although they usually die when hot, not cold.. but.. anything is possible), or you have a few coil packs which dont fire properly until hot (water ingress possibly, into the coil assembly)..

  • Author

Possibly but I've had them all off & they look fine. Why would more than one fail all of a sudden though?

One other thing I've noticed is that the engine seems to run OK when the revs are high, say above 3500! don't know why that is. Not much use when driving through traffic though!

You might be right about the Power Transistor Unit being knackered though, do you think if I took it to Nissan they'd try plugging one in for me?!!!

Shaun,

Nope, I'd say they wouldn't.. and they'll want some stupid price (I seem to remember £400 being mentioned)..

Best way to get a PTU is to buy this kit . It's the new style PTU, and is actually cheaper than the old one!

Or see if you can borrow one off someone...

Cheers for that.

Only problem I have is that I live in Bangor, North Wales! & I don't know anyone with a Zed around here. I suppose I could always take it up to Manchester to A1 Jap spares & plug one of theirs in. In fact, I could just plug different things in till it does work!!!

Shaun,

I think it is time you take a step back and think about things logically.

You have A problem in the combustion process of the car - So think Fuel - Air - Spark...

You have check the ECU for errors ?

that is the brain of the car and will detect many faulty sensors the will effect the above.

You have checked the plugs and the Coil Packs ! and all their connectors.

You have checked the TPS, PTU and CAS

you have Checked the Fuel Pressure ! if you have a problem with one of many things ( pump ,filter, Fpr , lines Etc - It will show up here.

Also check the Injector harness if you haven't already.

Have you checked the MAS and Filter ?

Remmember the Car is in closed feedback loop mode

This is a tricky problem and yes it could come down to a sticky / damaged injector - As Andy so rightly said just coz an injector is fireing doesn't mean it is working properly. The only way you can check these is to take it to a specialist.

I think you need to have a long hard look at the Air Fuel and ignition systems in the manual and try all the tests you can - most of the common flaws have been touched on here, so you have probably already found out it aint gonna be an easy fix

Best of luck and if you need a hand - your not a million miles away from chester over there are ya - Book it in with Andy and let him have a look ( that is two you owe me know punk wink.gif )

Checked the ECU codes & I get 55 which means sensors are OK. Obviously though I take that with a pinch of salt!!! According to the ECU the mixture on the RHS is being corrected OK, but the LHS isn't! Saying that, it never has run right on the LHS.

I think the O2 sensor was half knackered before, if an Oxygen sensor was totally knackered, could it cause the problems I am having?

Which Andy would that be who lives in Chester then? I might have to pay him a visit.

Just a bit further than Chester m8 - Preston to be exact - J28 off the M6 then a few miles if you want a good distance calculation. If you wanna fetch the car up then let me know and we can go throught the full diagnostics....

At last...someone else in de North part of de Wales!!! biggrin.gif

Shaun mate, what colour is yours? I know a red one based in Menai and during the summer I went into Bill Smiths motorbike shop and when I went in there was a red Z parked by the hotdog van. Came out and the red one had gone but either a silver or black, might have been dark blue was there instead! LOL biggrin.gif

Mate, I live on Anglesey and had a new PTU on my car not long ago. Not only that but I'm off to Johnnies on Saturday to get my mobile. Duffman is a stones through away from there unless he would be prepared to come down???

Chuffed that another Z owner is near me! Cool! wink.gif

I've also got a Techtom which could help to see what's going on.

P.S. What air filter are you running? Have you had a look at the throttle bodies? Cleaning them would be a good place to start! wink.gif Andy could fit my Blitz zorst while he uses the other hand to fix your car! ROFL biggrin.gif

LMAO Timmy biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Will be at Johnnys on saturday meself m8 - what time you heading there?

Shaun - anytime you're this way just gimme a buzz wink.gif As long as I have a few days notice there isn't usually any problem with timing...

I'd had enough last night so I spoke to some guy called Dave who used to work for Nissan & he's worked on 300's for 12 yrs! He plugged the car into a consult which told me just about everything. He must have spent over an hour diagnosing it & I think that I know what's wrong with it now. Came to the conclusion that both Lambda sesors are f****d! cos they're only giving out about 6mV!

The best thing is, he didn't want anything for doing it which I thought was pretty good of him.

I live in Y Felinheli but work in the University! I've got a Silver 300z, I've seen a few red zeds around here! How about this for weird, someone in my village has a 300z TT Silver same year, same reg but for 2 numbers!

Where abouts on Anglesey do you live Tim?

Actually, the reg thing isn't very unusual if the car is an import. A block of UK numbers are allocated for each year and if the cars were made the same year then they are likely to be exported from Japan the same year (due to the Shaken test) and assigned numbers from the same block at a similar time. I saw a red 300 TT swb that was only 5 numbers from mine and I was driving to Stevenage one day and followed an import Toymota of some sort, that was the next number to mine.

Andy,

Should be at Johnnies for about 1pm(ish) mate. See you there hopefully. wink.gif

Shaun,

Just outside Holyhead mate, I've seen your car I think during the summer if it was you and not the other one.

This Dave character, he wouldn't happen to work for Nelson in Agergele would he? I took my car over to them not long after I got it. Must admit he is pretty good with them, he had a red one in while I was there which had just had the engine bay wiring loom replaced. Nelson prices though! wink.gif

That's the very same guy. He now works for the Skoda garage in Abergele but if anyone ever phones Nissan regarding a 300, they always put you in touch with Dave cos the other guys haven't got a bloody clue when it comes to the Z32!

If you need to get your car plugged into a consult, he's the guy to see.

One quick point about checking the wiring harness around the injectors. Wiggling the connectors may not be enough. You have to get the damn things of and check for corrosion.

I had a major hesitation every time I hit 3500 - 4000 rpm which was completely cured by polishing the injector terminals with a dremel.

WTF??? He's left Nelson and gone to work for Skoda? Mind you not that bad a move I suppose seeing as most Skoda technology is now VAG.

So he took a consult with him then Shaun? Good effort! I'll have to remember that.

Funny how Nelson techies end up serving a long stretch with the big Jap firm and then bomb out to something less reputable! LMAO biggrin.gif

Like the guy over the road from me, he used to work for Nelson for about the same number of years and is now working for Harry's in Bangor...hmmmm!

I bet he was glad to get away from the Skodas for a while & work on something a bit more interesting!

Regarding the car, Aaron is going to send me some O2 sensors so hopefully my car should be sorted after that, bout bloody time too me thinks!
