Hi guys, as a Z newbie but not to much of a bad hand with motors, i got home this morning just as my headlights and dash lights started to dim, then car started running real bad as i got on to my parking spot then conked out.

 

After investigating i noticed when i put my meter over the batt terminals, i was not getting any charge from the alternator. car will jump fine and run for a little while then again die. so my conclusion is most proberly the bushies but the odd escort or cav wouldnt be a problem, i just about found the alternator on the Z.

Whats happening mate, when you were driving it was it firing properly?

 

I'm not too familiar with your engine but find the distributor and take the cover off clean the contacts.

 

This damp and wet weather is not helping the electrics at all.

 

D'oh.. I had a feeling there was a reason I couldn't give that link.. Now I remember

fires ok with jump leads on but when i take em off its starts missing. I did put the meter accross the terms and was getting now power from the alternator, just watch the needle drop and then all dash lights(im digital) go off then car conked out. I do remember also, my bro had all new belts put on about 8months ago, but i have never had a problem nor has the belt slipped??

always the bloody same hehehe. ive put a new batt on da wifes motor, new leads and plugs cap etc etc yesterday, my convertable is up and running now, and then the Z dies, hehehe as ya do one the other goes...... SOD LAWS!!!

 

am pissed off with cars!! hehehe hey anyone play "return to castle Wolfenstein"? i know changing subject a bit but have to take my mind off the next oncoming bill!!!

If your sure theres no power coming from the alternator then it looks to have died.

 

I'm not sure if you have an external voltage regulator or one which is incorporated on the alternator, check the voltage output on that too.

I was gona drive it down the road and call the AA out, but being a Z well, would they know??

well found the alternator, just got to get it out. Guy will do it locally for about £80. He has done em before so not to bad after all.

Yep, cheers Stu mate, need to get together with you at some point as I noticed from yer webpage that you're into Scooby Doo(Scuba) and I wanna do my PADI!!! Not in this country though, open water dives in Welsh quarries? I think not! LOL

 

House I was at temporarily before moving to Anglesey was just down the road from Dorothea Quarry where a shit load of Scuba guys have died! Why do they do it? Not my idea of fun, diving to see nothing coz of shit visibility, freezing water and the occasional shopping trolley sighting!

Tim, completely off-topic, but why do you want to do PADI? PADI is the American version of BSAC and unless it's changed in the last 2 months, doesn't always include the First Aid training, which is why a lot of BSAC places won't accept PADI people unless they complete this training first. Whereas BSAC is accepted anywhere as it is generally considered to be better than PADI and yes even some of the American groups say this.

the same happened to me and all it was, was the live on the back of the alternator had corroded off so just soldered it to a terminal and put it back on and its fine (touch wood) it is a pain to do though cos u have to remove the alternator to do this
