Have a look at what a cambelt look`s like when it breaks at motorway speeds, very basically the belt was way past its due date as the last picture shows and was going to go at any moment.

Now your thinking valves and pistons etc arn`t you? well this guy must have had a lucky day because despite what you see there was NO DAMAGE! a new belt, pump, pulleys, stat etc and a perfectly running engine, all compressions well within spec, now I call that lucky.

could that have caused any accidents is everyone ok if so.

thats a change then lol

Owner reported that he just felt the car cut out (auto box ) and he pulled over to the hard shoulder and called for a toW truck, good plan eh?

foook.! that was more than lucky

Jesus! just slightly lucky then. He wont forget to change his belt again. Dave

The irony of it is the car was booked in to have the belt swapped anyway before this occurred! JUST BOUGHT IT FORWARD A BIT.

Jeff I've heard people on here say the motor's run clear of the valves. Thought it was rubbish ???

Quoted " Autobox saves the day again eh? "

That is exactly what happened, belt breaks...engine cuts out...torque convertor disconnects drive immediately.

But doesn't the inertia of an engine doing 3000rpm still continue to make it rotate until stopped?

No, with an auto it disengages drive when the belt goes, its like turning the key off and the engine will just stop. Thats why your MUCH less likely to do any damage if a belt goes on an auto.

Yes, but say you're reving the car and then turn the key off, it's not going to come to an immediate stop, you still have interia there, even if it's not for very long.

Sorry, just trying to get my head round it.

Interesting  So you can use an old cambelt on an auto safely til it dies? :D Kind of like a service light, but more spectacular :D

oooh lucky fella LOL!! good for you autobox LOL!!

i've heard that when the cambelt goes theres not much damage but when you pull over and try to turn the key again to start the car thats when most of the damage is caused!!

Belt went on this and detroyed lots of valves and a Piston
