Firstly I apologise if this is the wrong place for this but it seems the most appropriate.

So I'm totally new to this idea of buying a 300zx, up until a week ago I wasn't even considering it. I've loved 300zx's since I first clapped my eyes on them many, many years ago but until the recent apparent massive drop in price I never considered the idea of owning one. (and until the wife said "they look nice")

If I *were* to take the plunge I'd be looking at an NA manual for around £3-3.5k, what I need from you people is to tell me the truth, tell me how expensive they are to run, how completely impractical they are and how you wish you owned a simple runabout.

A little background, I'm 25, it would be my only car but I don't rely on a car for transport, it's be used daily for a short work run and some random trips,, really not a huge number of miles. Insurance quotes are coming in at £1500 which I can deal with. I'm trying to convince myself under the idea that I can throw some money at a zx for a year, if it gets too expensive I'll cut my losses and sell.

I just want a chance while I'm still young.

But! It's your job to convince me this is a stupid idea, tell me just how expensive these things are to run.

I love it, best car I've ever owned. :hyper:

Drive it sensibly (???) and it'll behave sensibly.

Drive it like it should be driven, and it'll behave like it should :x: :D

I have been driving for 25 years and my Z TT made me respect it. I picked it up on a wet day and came off of a roundabout and gave it a bit too much gas and the ass danced around on me. After that I knew she had to be treated with respect. I have only had mine a few weeks and finaly took it out on a dry day this weekend and had a ball. Its the most enjoyable car for looks and performance. If you can afford the insurance and the running costs, they are thursty, then by all means get one from the forum where they have been looked after. Check with elephant.co.uk for a quote. IMHO I think they are expensive to run but the rewards of driving them are priceless.

I will get off my soap box now.

So TT to fast for you as well then ???? :)

without a shadow of doubt! lol

nah, I know how my right foot thinks and a TT at the moment would be madness....

You would learn to adjust to the TT, is the acceleration up to 3krpm not the same as the na zed anyway?

LOL I guess it would be a bit more grinworthy than the NA, although many NA drivers say they prefer the smooth response of the NA engine, whichi s fair enough.

NA is ok,but after a while you will soon want a TT ;)

n/a are to gutless for me,get to 90 and they just die  where as a TT will pull all the way to 150+very quickly ;)

Good point to buying an NA is..no turbos to blow or leak, gearboxes will last longer as with most of the mechanical parts that are under less strain!make sure the car has been well looked after, inc cambelt waterpump etc as regular oil changes to are important every 3k miles

hi cheesebury , where abouts in kent do you live, maybe a few of us could meet up somewhere i dont no if theres any na drivers near us but theres at least 7 tt drivers i no of in croydon surrey, your best bet is to drive both and let you own heart make up its mind , also buying off here would be a good place to start, as i did never looked back and im probably one of the most unlucky on here had new turbos, replacement engine, and still got a few things to do but id still fight to the death if someone tried to take it off me ," or if someone on barryboys slagged it off" will explain that later ,

guess im saying i love the car to bits and have no regrets no matter what it throws at me im a hardcore zed owner and will never get rid, best advice is mate try before you buy either na or tt its your choice, all the best paul

im 21 dont ask me about insurance but i think its very thirsty cost me about 55 pounds for 180 miles of fast and normal driving but what would you expect for a car that does 0-60 under 5.5 seconds. be easy on the wet and round the bends. if your gonna buy a zed like said earlier be ready for an expense if it happens in the first 4 months of owner ship ive spent 1000 on a clutch and cambelt service. not oo bad as i was expected to do the service. i have done many miles so far and its nearly time for new tires which will cost around 400 for 4 excellent quality tyres which sould last you thousands of miles depending on how you drive.

i love driving it in the wet even though u cant put ur foot down but u can have fun. i have been driving for 4 years now. before i used to have a calibra t and a 2 litre turbos polo.

get a tt if you think ull want somthing faster later

goodluck

Get one, but get a good one off here............

Yep with you on that 300ZX is the best handling 2 wheel drive car "I like HICAS once you get used to it that is" Had a 16V Integrale before it. That is the best handling car EVER.. you DON'T have to slow down for the corners. But you do have to stop often to pick bits up that fall off.. Japs can build cars that ROCK!!!!!

if you can afford to insure a TT then i would say try to get one of these. (try norton 0121 246 6060, got mine on classic @ 5k miles per year, cost £367 comp)

you do get used to the power, and as long as your not a total muppet you shouldnt have any problems ie: putting it sideways into someones front lawn etc! ;)

as someone else said you do eventually get used to the 300 bhps and then you want more :D .

IMO a car this good looking has to have the 300 horses to go with it!

Well i went from driving a 1.1 fiat punto to my z, and she's a tt swb, i know people that have been driving for years and couldn't handle one and people that can step straight into one and be fine!

Get one mate!!, you will love it, and my misses likes it as well (as long as i dont put my foot down!!) dont let people put you off because of the power, you will get used to it! its the most fun you will ever have for 3k!!

when i did a search for car insurance, there wasnt a check option for NA so i presumed all na and TT were same insurance group

get one you know it makes sense..!

i've owned several jap sport cars and by the Z has been the best it has that WOW factor everywere i go.

it also seems to go on rails .!

The NA and TT are the same insurance group. However some insurers make exceptions, ignore the ratings and take the difference into account.

Although with many insurers who are "scared of imports" its very easy to insure a UK TT for less than a NA Import :headvswal

quite simple buy one and grin from ear to ear every time you drive but you do have to respect them as the zed will bite when unsettled

I tried that. Managed to get his head inside the glovebox (although it would'nt shut) but could only fit one paw inside the ashtray. :(

Crewl Bugger!!!

Have got a proper dog harness for my golden retriever now so she sits in the passenger seat with the seat belt on quiet happily... Doesn't like the fact she can't stick her head out the window anymore but she loves it when the T-tops off!!!

Lol , I'm gonna visit you to see that. I want a Husky and the missus keeps winding me up that I wont let any of the animals near the Zed. Dave

they are fun and will give you plenty of grins but the cost of them plummeting is down to the fact that they are not a cheap car to run in any way shape or form.............fuel gearboxes and the inevitable toys you will want are no cheaper now than they were 5 years ago in fact running a z now costs a lot more than it did then

Yep would second that!

Get one you know it makes sence

I got a NA (could have got a TT but chose not to even though I'd driven one and I test motorbikes for a living) and I love it.

I've had no problems in almost two years use.

Also my wife would be with me most of the time and there is nothing in this world I would do to endanger her life.

haha makes a change to some on here lol
