Car cutting out when cold?

Had a problem with the Zed yesterday. Started it up, it would rev up to about 1500rpm then drop right down momentarily to below 500rpm (normally cutting out). It was also cutting out when you reach the bite point to move off, you'd have to give it loads of throttle to get the car moving.

 

Anyone have ideas to why it might be doing this? It starts up fine on the first turn of the key but then it does this...

    check the main temperature sensor connector at the front of the engine (the yellow one)
