Anyone know anything about these cars, what they are like etc to drive..im currently half way between this and an FTO....

Would a GT4 2l turbo be horrendous on fuel?

I like the toyota GT's with the pop up lights they in my opinion are the best models...

Good cars. Well built, decent power, loads of grip.

GT4 is a 2.0 16v Turbo with 4WD.

Hurrendous on fuel ? - well a 2.0 4-cylinder Turbo is going to be better than the 3.0 v6 TT of the Zed.

The pop-up headlight models :

ST165(1987 - 1989) 182/190 bhp (Uk/Jap)

ST185(1989 - 1993) 200/ 222 bhp (Uk/Jap)

I had a ST185 GT4 about 6 years ago.

Check out http://www.gt4oc.com

you had a 300zx and youre worried about fuel???

I got rid of my 300zxtt for a gt4, and in my opnion I made the right move, i dont regret selling the zed one bit, except the amount i sold it for LOL.

Anyway go here http://www.gt4oc.com for info on the models, if you watch the intro to the site, theres some basic specs but if you want more info youll find plenty of links to other sites.

The one with the pop up headlights is the 185 model, i've got the 205 model (the one with round headlights).

Depends how much cash you want to spend , but for the cash they are a bargain making a change from subarus.

The GT model you mentioned in your post is 2wd non turbo, the gt4 is 2.0 turbo 4wd.

just get one !!!

My ST185 GT4 was much better on fuel than the ZED but I couldnt care less about fuel consumption (except when the mrs asks me I get 30 to the gallon from the zed).

If I had a choice between a GT4 and an FTO, deffo I'd go for the GT4, FTO's are getting like escorts and astra's up here.

Just my 2p's worth

Agree with that, but they are getting very dated looking now. But i'd still prefer them to the new celica.

the reason i mention fuel is the reason im selling the 300zx it costs me about 40 quid every 4 days, im driving really conservatilvey and not getting more than 250 on a tank..im hoping a gt4 would be better if i drive that better!

I like the pop up lights but the interior on the newer models looks better obviously...havent read a bad thing about them yet which is good...

love my 300zx but its just too expensive for me and as im splitting up with the mrs i need to recover some cash.

I was usin about 30 quid of petrol a week and bought a renault 19 diesel, i ended up better off with cheaper running costs and the zed on classic insurance and her indoors happier for once as she hates the zed.

My mate has a Celica GT4 tuned to 400HP. Now i have little experience with performance cars to be honest but this thing was awesome. Never knew a car could go around an average roundabout at 60mph. BMW M3's were chew toys to this.

But i went for a 300ZX turbo because its friggin big and fast! I love 80's cars so much. And dont like the diluted sports cars now like the Audi TT and BMW 6 series - they look so dull. You see a new BMW 645 go down the road.. and well its a non event. You see a 300ZX go down the road and it catches your eye.

GT4 MPG will be sh1te, maybe Scoopy boy can give us a better idea but a mate of mine had the one with the flippy up headlights and said it was cack on fuel economy with the 4wd.

But saying that...same engine on the GT4 as my MR Tubby and TBH they are fookin' bullet proof! Plus Toyota build quality is far superior to Nissan IMHO. Engine and drivetrain is solid! ;)

Why not ask Scoops. He owns a very nice GT-Four.

Or will he get banned for posting his opinion.? ;)

He already replied ^^^ ;)

Had Zeds, a Gen6 GT4, Gen5 GT4, Gen Celica SS2's, Gen5 Celicas and an FTO.

Zeds are heavy on fuel but a LITTLE bit better that a GT4. gen6Gt4 had loads of power, poor mpg. FTO was good on fuel but thirsty for the amount of power(V6). Good handling.

Gen5 Celicas were great - not too powerful but good mpg - had a convertible that turned heads more than the Zeds.

Of all the cars mentioned, best compromise for me is Gen6 SS2 with superstrut suspension.

175bhp, good performance, great handling, good mpg, spacious, potential to make stunning when funds allow.

Gimme 3 grand and you can have mine. :)

I've heard the GT4 were a bit unreliable, possibly the gearbox? I can't remember where I heard that though.

Yamiedog - yer right, not the best reliability record.

I had one that had a commonly known problem - crunchy into gears - luckily it was sorted by a local gearbox specialist at reasonable cost. £250.

Yep I would agree, the gearbox on my MR is quite quaint! Takes some getting used to but not had any problems with mine with crunching etc. Just takes some persuasion sometimes to get it in gear. Still love it though!

i totally disagree. Based on the fact that i cant recall anyone moaning about a gearbox faileing on the owners club forum. In fact quite a few put quite alot of bhp through stock gearboxes.. theyre well over engineered

Why on earth would we do that?

I like the fto...pretty rare round these parts.....heres a nice example....

Fto is nice...in a sporty little car for the missus kind of way ;)

Getting very common, I see several a day.

unfortunatly they are also FWD :( with little tuning potential :(

A very close friend of mine has just recently had the front taken of his GT4 (by a mondeo) and to be honest i thought it was great fun to drive, makes a nice change from scooby's and evo's coz you dont see many of them around. A few of my friends have FTOs and for the money they're nice cars - see a few on here http://www.hyeline.com/import_portfolio.htm but they are quite common now
