& what does it do please ?

It looks like the same type of light sensor thats on my clifford alarm, it senses whether its night or day so it automatically turns the lights on at night. And also the thing next to it looks like an ultrasonic detector for an alarm. HTH P.s that red long thing could also be the pick up for your alarm remote.
