Smoking in public is going to have a partial ban. Thank god! I can now go out without fear that I'm going to be breathing in noxious gasses and making my clothes stink! Bring it on!

But, I'm disappointed because it doesn't go far enough; there will still be plenty of pubs that don't serve food.

What we needed (and didn't get) is a total ban on smokin in public places so it would *force* the smokers (and believe me, nicotine addicts really need forcing) to stop. But this pathetic government just couldn't live up to their manifesto.

Well, hey-ho, it's a start and a blanket ban on smoking in all public places won't be that far off.

Tell ya what though, if they ever banned beans then I'd be a very unhappy man.

McDonalds should be banned as well! LOL

Yeah, but only because their 5hite doesn't have anywhere near the same amount of fat and crap that McDos have. Shame as I like Big Macs and Double cheeseburgers, but want them launched into Saturn's upper ionosphere....to stop temptation. I don't want a belly.

mmm foood no stop it gaz lol

im going to bed in a minute to stop myself reaching for the late night takeaway menus lol

This country makes me laugh, you dont want to watch a tv programme, you switch it off, you dont want to sit in a smokey pub, go somewhere else. All you guys who either dont smoke or have given up smoking are missing the big point. Do you really think the goverment did this because of your, or my health? If that was the case they would ban cigarettes totally, but they never will because the tax that they get from sales supports the NHS. Where else, apart from petrol, do they get to charge 400% tax? Because its good for the health of the nation/ environment? My stripey @rse

Well heres a signpost on the rocky road of life chaps, if you read the news papers, you will notice a lot of stories about the cost in health/ policing/ medical costs of drinking/alchohol. Do you really think that the massive industry/ pressure group machine that has sprung up around tobacco is all going to go home , safe in the knowledge that they have banned the dreaded weed? No chance, they are going to move in on the alchohol drinkers and the car drivers. These people dont give a monkeys if your healthy, or your clothes smell nice as long as they have an input into your life, and can tell you what to do.

I am guessing you will be less than happy when you can no longer drive to your local (congestion charge, hiked petrol prices, total car ban in cities) nor have a pint there ( cost of policing/ assaults on nurses/ damage to family unit/ bad example to youngsters)?

You might think I am having a rant, and as a confirmed smoker of 30 yrs who actually enjoys it ( sod it, I fooking love my tabs) I am , but if you think its all in my mind:

There is currently an EU plan to totally ban all motorcycles within 10 yrs

They are currently expanding the congestion charge in london and Birmingham, Manchester and liverpool are looking at imposing one

They are trialling cats eyes which can not only tell if you are speeding, but read your number plate (and no doubt pick up the signal from your car that they are also trialling)

Cars that dont let you cross a white line, or get too close to the car in front

... and on and on

Enjoy your smokeless pubs, but don't winge when you cant do the things you enjoy in a few years time. Meanwhile I am planning to be the first person who gets banged up for having a tab in a public place.

This should be down to Pub and Restuarants own discretion, but instead its a restriction of freedom and liberty on the "soft targets" for new Labour.

My Mrs just went on a hen night to Dublin where smoking is banned.

They went to a night club and she said rather than smelling of smoke it smelt of Guinnnes farts and BO!

I have to admit I smoke and I want to keep doing it. It makes me look more grown up and the women love it!

Agree with some of Jocks rant. I'm still a smoker but only on a night out now. TBH the legislation wont make any difference. Alot of drinkers smoke so establishments will just not serve food, its business suicide if they dont. The legislation is worthless but gets labour off the hook.

Yep fooking smart hey.

Wake up and smell the coffee. Oh you carn't can you because all stimulants and things you may enjoy have been banned.

Wellcome to the nanny state and remember big brother is watching you.

Nice to hear a bit of your profound wisdom angain Jock. Must confess to getting a bit pissed off with all the plastic do goody goodies that have emerged lately on the forum. That are aged about 10 and yet seem to think they kown as much as my misiss who thinks its her right to tell other people how they should live.

I have had 2 Friends both were aged 27 who died of cancer and neither smoked. One of my sons friends has just had an eye removed and several other bits and my cusine Diane has had most of her femaning organs remove all through cancer and not one of them smoked.

My Father died of Cancer as did my ant his sister and two uncles (his brothers) only my father smoked.

The Medireranian countries are the biggest smokers yet they have the lowest levels of cancer and heart desease in the world. Believe me Stress and genetics has more to do with it than anything. Fags have never been proven as the cause. I feel you have to read everything and form your own oppinions instead going with the current agenda. (question. who gains from this and why?) (Where's the money in it?)

By the way I'm a not smoker (well i don't smoke tabaco)

On another note:D All of the PCT's (NHS trusts) I work with are broke:( Most are in the red by millions. Now this bird flu, that the media is feeding us with? Just a question that arose today at work is that the PCT's pay for all the flu vaccinations, they usually run short every year, doing a small % of the population. If the government want to jab all of us as they say, who is going to pay for this? I have my ideas!

Have to say that the smokers will always be against a ban and the non smokers will be very welcome to it.

I dont smoke and personally find the stench of tobaca most vulgar! :hurl: I've always put up with it though, many of nights out and didn't really complain too much.

When I first moved to Canada last year I was in Bliss. No smoking in any public places at all!! yes the smokers made a big ho ha about it but people still go out. Most just go outside for a quick puff and then get on with it. ;) You get home at the end of the night and still smell persil fresh :D :D

It was only when I retured to the UK after being away for 6 months that I really noticed the smoke. I couldnt stand being in a pub and smelling that sh!t. Why should I have to stay at home to avoid someone elses stinking habbit??

I think though to be honest it would be hard as a smoker to give it up smoking at the pub or club. I think there should be government regulations enforcing decent air extraction systems. The sort of thing that would pull your wig off. That way everone is happy. Except the owners who have to pay for it

Good God, chill out. You calling me a goody goody 10 year old?

Alcohol is more of a killer, but it sure as hell isn't pasive. I'm not going to get liver failure by sitting next to an alcoholic.

On a different point, a recent public survey showed more than 90% of people in Ireland support the smoking ban, including many smokers ! This is almost the same in the UK

I know it seems to many smokers that their rights and freedom of choice are being eroded, but unfortunatly, as they are the ones causing the problem by choosing to smoke, they must be the ones who have to compromise.

I fully support the rights of smokers to enjoy killing themselves, if thats what they choose to do. However they just cannot be allowed to continue wrecking the health of people who have chosen not to expose themselves to those risks.

The fact is, smokers have shown that self regulation doesn't work, and now governments all over the world are waking up to the fact that they must act and force the issue.

I don't mean this personally in any way, but in general the attitude of some smokers towards their habit is fundamentally selfish. It is not acceptable to make avoiding smoke a non-smoker's problem, but all too many smokers are happy to say things like "If you don't like smoke, don't goto bars" etc. They are the ones choosing to persue that habit, therefore they will have to change it. It's going to happen, regardless of what you, I, or anyone else thinks of it... so nows the time to start dealing with it.

Just my $00.2 worth. :)

Well said, Jock!

The thing that really pisses me off is the *****x they say about passive smoking. There was a study conducted from 1958 to 1998 for the B.M.J. and the professor in charge (Sir Richard Dolly) concluded that there was no significant increase in the risk of disease for those exposed to second hand smoke and that he would have no issues (health-wise) with anyone who smoked in his presence. In effect, the Govt. is lying when it says that second hand smoke kills. There is no evidence to support it, it just appeases the 'right-on' public who are ignorant of the medical research.

In fact, the poor air quality in London is more harmful to your health than smoking - so we'll just get rid of London, shall we?

There is evidence to support both arguments actually. Depends on your views and who you choose to believe I guess.

But I'm sure breathing in the millions of chemicals that are found in the things is sure as hell not healthy.

But that (as I'm a non smoker and smoking does seriously affect my asthama, so I do have some grounds to base my opinions on)...is my feeling.

Well said - and I'm a non-smoker, always have been.

If a pub wants to allow smoking then let them - put a sign on the door saying this is a smoking pub and then if you don't want to go in then DON'T.

Same goes for any other establishment.

And another thing about smoking and smokers is why can't they dispose of their tab ends properly?? -

Well I never smoke when in the company of someone that doesnt unless they tell me its ok to, I never ask as I dont want to impose my habit on anyone else, but, I do agree with Jock on this, where is it all going to end? we are slowly loosing are freedom and will live our lives for the good of the government.

i welcome the ban i only wish it was more strict, smokers are denying the non smokers of their freedoms we choose not to smoke yet we are forced to breath the non filtered toxins. it is a personal choice of someones if they want to commit slow suicide but i don't agree with them getting away with virtual murder. if a person wants to smoke they should suffer the cold and rain to indulge in their habit.

jock so if the non smokers don't like it they should go somewhere else, what about in supermarkets, shopping malls, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. where are we supposed to get our food or clothes. why should we be outcasts.

Smoking has never been allowed in Supermarkets. Most Malls ban it, and most restuarants have smoking and non-smoking sections.

I quit smoking 2 weeks ago, and it would certainly be a lot easier on me if I did'nt have to endure others smoking around me in bars, but this Forced restriction by the goverment on freedom is wrong!

Drinkers are ruining my life, if I wish to walk through town at night I have to put up with their loud mouthed crap and puking in the streets.

Cars are ruining my life if I want to go for a quiet walk in the countryside the noise is too much.

Aeroplanes are ruining my life flying over head at night breaking my sleep.

Dogs are runing my life with their crap all over the pavement.

Fast foods joints with litter all over the place, mobile phones, motorbikes, the list could go on and on and on, seems to be a lot of you want big brother to have the right to ban anything they want, and with your attitudes they will.

Heres the thing. I don't give a poo if you drink yourself into a stupor every night. You drinking 50 pints doesn't pickle my liver.

Can't say the same for smoking though.

This hard done by argument is continually rolled out when banning smoking is mentioned.

"Oh, next they'll be banning us from drinking / vvanking / watching TV".

Cobblers.
