My mate has got a problem with an extention that was built on his house. One of the walls is only a 4" thick wall and the other 2 are 9". When he bought the house, there is no mention of this at all on the survey (basic survey was done). Does anyone know if this should have been picked up on the survey and if so, what can he do about it?

I just had a survey done, and they put such a complicated disclaimer in there I seriously doubt you have any comeback. This would seem to be the case especially where a basic survey is undertaken which amounts to is the house there? is it going to fall down? is it worth what theyre paying for it? and is there anything that a blind man with no sense of touch could find?

Basic Survey is just that, its purely for valuation purposes i.e. is it worth the money the lender is granting you. A full survey your covered but it costs. If anything is discovered you can sue the surveyor etc. However??? I'd go to the local planning dept. and check the building regs for that extension when it was passed. Probably worth getting a structural engineer to do a report aswell. If IHO its not good wait a while, make some cracks and do it through the buildings insurance:D

it's brick. The reason the guy only did it in 4" was because his neighbour has built onto his land and he didn't want to lose amymore ground.

If it passed building regs then it must be sound. If not then, dont even go there:(
