Hi gang!

Just wondering what's involved in transferring plates over. I've sold my old car, but still have the MOT and V5 as I want to change the plates over to my zed before signing the V5 off to the new owner.

Now, what's involved? Do I have to take the tax disks, MOT and V5 to my local DVLA office? Do they re-issue to the tax? Is it £70 to do all this?

Will the original number from my old car be re-used or will I have to get new plates and a different number for that car?

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Why not phone up th DVLA and ask them?

You could have done it by the time it took you to type it all out ;)

I think transfering it costs about £20 but you have to pay for a new reg of your old car.

just going through this myself as ive just bought a runaround that the owner has a plate to transfer over to it - as far as ive been able to find out you need to take everything to the dvla and they will give you a date registration for your car and your plate goes onto a retention cert which is £80 and £25 administration fee (but you dont need to pay to put it back onto the other car) they issue tax and mot for the new registration

theres a chance the old registration for the car will be given back but if not - a date plate will be assigned, im hoping they can do this on the spot cause im waiting for the car, as sending off the docs and the retention form can take between 2 and 6 weeks

theres some good advice here

Ace!! Thanks, so I'm only looking at paying £25 then to swap the plates over? :D

Ace!! Thanks, so I'm only looking at paying £25 then to swap the plates over? :D

Yup, as long as the cars are MOT'ed etc its only £25 for the swop over!!

Ok so we have conflicting replies here. What will I be paying to do a simple numberplate swap?? £80 or £25?

think it might depend if its actually a private cherished number

if its actually a private number ie: not a P123 ABC

then it needs a retention cert before you transfer it to another car, thats the £80

if its just transfering a year prefix plate to another car then it might be just £25

How can you differentiate between a cherished number and a none cherished number? Where are the boundaries for that? Mine's A2 P*X, what could this be construed as then?

It was a plate that was bought for the car.

I don't want to put it on retention, I simply want to do a straight swap from vehicle to vehicle.

yours being a a2 plate indicates that its a cherished number as dvla class all 1-20 numbers plus 00's and triple numbers as cherished it cost me £80 to put a irish plate on my bmw i think u'll find si it's £80 transfer whichever way you look at it as my irish plate was on retention so the guy had paid the £25 but i still had to pay £80 to put it on the car

How can an Irish plate be a cherished number then? (no offence, just wondering)

cherished plates are dateless

if yours is basically an A plate might be around 1980ish and probably classed as a prefix plate

nope definatly a plate starting a2 is a private plate as dvla offered all plates A 1-20 as cherished numbers when they started to sell them

So it's going to be £80, but I don't have to pay anything ontop of that to put a random dated plate on the old car the private plate was coming off?

do you know if the local offices are able to sort out the retention certificate then and there? or do they have to send the stuff of to swansea?

no they give you the dated number p[late to go back on 9 times out of 10 it will be the original plate for the car

not sure if local offices do it there and then cause of the mot change and log book change mine had to go to swansea but took around 14 days i believe

So it's going to be £80, but I don't have to pay anything ontop of that to put a random dated plate on the old car the private plate was coming off?

Hey Si,

The £80 is all in - includes transfer of your cherished number to your car and the "standard reg" being allocated to the donor car.

Take the form, both MOTs, both tax discs and both V5s to your local VRO. Queue for 5 hours (like I did at Stanmore :headvswal ) pay your money and its all done for you.

(NB some VROs are good - I use Luton now and they take 10 minutes.....)

They allocate the numbers to each car as appropriate and you get your V5 back in a couple of weeks, but the transfer is completed immediately so you need to have the new plates ready to go on.

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

When I sold the number off of my MGZT I had to pay £80 + £25 so you are going to have to part with £105 at least. Then you may have to pay further fees because as we all know you dont get a bargain from the govenment especially when a motor vehicle is concerned. :headvswal

Cheers guys! Much appreciated for everyone's help.

Vin, I think that £25 is the retention fee. As I am doing a simple swap, that charge should not apply to me I don't think.

You might be right bud. I sold the plate with the fees included in the price of £800. I think the £25 was my end and the £80 would have been he's (to tranfer to he's motor)?

  • 1 year later...

It is quite difficult to get a number containg 300Z.

The nearest is one of the Northern Ireland numbers of the OZ format (ie. --30 OZ etc). Another good bet is 3002 --.

There is an old 240 Z in the owners club, registered 24 OZ.

If any of you have got good pictures of your 300Zs with their cherished numbers, you can put them on my website, if you think they are good enough.
