Anybody know how the feck you remove the gear knob on a manwell ?

I've twisted, pulled, pushed, yanked and even had a pipe wrench on it with a rag and marked it and yet it still refuses to come off.

Am I missing something ?, left hand thread or something ?

Help please

Yes mate, anti c/w, the leather has also sort of peeled away from the knob itself, difficult to describe really, as I twist with my hands the leather seems to slip around, it just wont shift

deffo twist bud unless u have an aftermarket knob on already then u may need to unscrew the bottom half and undo some small grommits which grip the gearstick with an allen key.

Its the stock knob. Have taken out the console and gaiter (as I'm replacing the gaiter). Under that is a round white plastic ring with a rubber o ring on it to hold the gaiter. Other that that all I can see is the gear stick metal rod with the knob and like a round bit of metal with a small cut out on it IIRC. do you turn this or the knob itself ?

Or maybe youve got a stock screw on thats been glued (belt and braces)

If you dont want to keep the knob cut through it with a junior hacksaw ..Ouch !

Good Luck

Thought about that, I've also asked before if anyone has a good condition stock one that I can replace it with as I will need that before I go any further.

Anyone got one they dont want/need for £ notes ?

I am just about to take mine off, it isnt in 100% condition, probably about 60% but its OK. Let me know if you want it?

Thanks

M.

Put some cardboard around it and use one of those twisty oil filter removers and a wrench, lastly try to get the gearknob warm as it loosens the glue, and buy some new bushes if you are taking it off worth replacing!

Please Mark, that'll be great, mine has had it anyway and I may need to saw it but will have another go when I get home. Let me know how it goes when you remove yours. Thanks for the advise.

They tend to be done up FT and locktite'd. It unscrews anticlockwise, just like any normal thread.

Mate, the only way to get it off is to cut it off. Me and my mate tried for 2 hours with every tool in the garage. First off you need to cut off the leather and padding, then you'll be left with an alloy knob. Cut through this in a ring about 2cm from the base and the top should come off, then just slowly cut a verticle/slight andle cut in the last bit but before cutting right through and damaging the threads wedge a large flat head screwdriver in the cut and twist/lever and the alloy should split open and fall off.

It's a bugger of a job but its the only way cause they are glued on!

Anyone got another spare stock knob?

ooops, got that the wrong way round, the thread is at the top and its glued at the bottom. Do the cut round the bottom/middle and the top will screw off easy then do the verticle cut in the bottom bit and split it off with a screwdriver.

Sorry, didn't know what i was thinking.

Sorry banana

We have never had to cut one off, if it is knackered fine otherwise heat it with a hairdryer and use the tool mentioned

Mark, where do you heat it ? just around the leather part or the gear 'stick' itsef ?

if you have access to the metal then heat that, it is preferable as it will conduct the heat straight to glue.
