All in all you havent got a bad deal at all there. The graphics is old but is able to play games, but not at a high res. Should Cope with 800x600. Everything else seems good.

What about keyboard, mouse, monitor?

Stuart

if you use a lot of immagination you may do without a monitor.... and you PC will perform great!!! no frame drops!!!

being in the biz Iain mate I can say not bad.

I pay £330+vodka for that so bout £370 all in.

Nah matey, no worries, £500 is a pukka price to pay for that system, we do buy in big quantity and get good prices but if I was doing someone a real favour I'd knock that spec system out for £450 so 500 squid is very fair mate smile.gif

I'm thinking of building something 'Athlon 1400-ish' from scratch. I've never done it before, does anyone have any tips/advice?

Cheers.

Tim,

But it's a Macintrash !! A triumph of form over function. Granted it's not much to do with Micro$oft, but it's still an expensive pretty box.

DaveW,

If you're building from scratch then a visit to www.overclockers.co.uk may be worthwhile. I favour a twin processor machine myself and they have some nice ABit VP6 motherboards and the ASUS that wil take dual AMD's.

alien v predator2 is another good one for multiplay as well ive been playing that recently and trust me the game is scary....wazza you need to get rtcw as this is the best multiplayer game going until you all get your hands on medal of honour allied assult i cant wait to see your body flying thouh the air after i send a few howitzers your way.....imagine the allied landing scene in saving private ryan and then you'll know how good this game is.....me thinks your memory is failing anyway wazza the last encounter we had you were running scared from my knife

Just shop around for the best deals and read up on the various bits you are interested in.

Get plenty of RAM (min of 256) it's so cheap you can get a Gb for £100 & a 7200rpm (npt 5400) ATA 100/133 HDD. Use a good motherboard, don't skimp, cheap ones are cheap because they are crap, not because they are good value.

It takes a while to get all the bits that suit what you want to do with it, but it'll be better than an off the shelf job.

Putting it together is piss easy.

Some links for you to have a look at, www.dabs.co.uk www.scan.co.uk www.overclockers.co.uk www.computerprices.co.uk

and a good place for reviews is www.tomshardware.com

Jezz.

Getting my new 1900+ Athlon, GeForce 3, 19" monitor, cordless keyboard and mouse, blah, blah, blah delivered on Friday so I'm very excited (it should be faster than my current P90 lol, it was a bit more than £500 though. £500 sounds a fair price)

Sorry Glen, should have asked you for a quote but got a bit carried away lol

Watch out for some new cannon fodder for you boys - coming to a game near you very soon

Duel processor is only any use if running win2K/Linux as they have multiprocessor kernels, even then they are not utilised very well.

Certainly with linux it requires you having threaded applications to make best use of 2 or more CPU's.

Not sure about XP & multiprocessor but it's shite anyway, steer well clear.

Sorry, I've never run any of those antiquated DOS based OS's that some people seem to like smile.gif. I am solidly NT/W2K/XP and Linux - all of which have sound multiprocessor kernels.

I wouldn't go that far, my Aussie mate who works with me has the old style iMac running a G3 450mhz processor. He had at one point Solaris8 intel running on Windows emulator and Mandrake Linux all at the same time with no stress to the box at all!

Show me a PC that can do that and I'll eat a Rotweiller turd with custard! LMFAO biggrin.gif

Not just a pretty box, unlike a PC it does what it says on the tin! biggrin.gif

P.S. also don't forget that that robbing bastard Gates knicked the entire Windows operating system from Steve Jobbs in the first place so effectively you're all running Mac OS's anyway...ROFLMFAO biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Oh by the way, don't mention the fact that Steve knicked the original Windows OS from Xerox!!! I dunno, dog eat dog back in the 80's with the computer era dawning! biggrin.gif

Edited coz technically Steve Jobbs didn't actually raz the OS from Xerox, they gave to him coz the senior management thought it would never catch on and mocked the device called a mouse!!! LMFAO biggrin.gif Stupid bastards!!!

Well I don't wanna defend Micro$oft, but you have to ask yourself whether your going to be up with the front runners or an also ran. I don't know about the internal architecture of Mac's now, but a few years ago it was a complete dogs dinner. Mac's used to be good because they went "Boing" when you turned them on/off and they had sound that worked and they had ... good games. That's why people liked them. Now PC's can do all that stuff and cheaper.

Anyway, if you want good emulator hardware and software then you can go knocking on the door marked Amiga - now that was a well designed system.

Xerox, another bloody disaster. The amount of innovation that came out of Xerox Parc in California, I think they just gave the lot away and never made a penny.

And whilst I'm on a mini rant ...

A mate of mine wrote a Mac emulator for a PC, did it all in assembler, cos he's clever like that. It was very convincing. Didn't take long, just made all the screen borders different, changed the font, removed most of the features, threw away the keyboard and used a broken mouse that had only one working button - nobody would have noticed !!

PS He even made a software shutdown for it using a logic switch and a relay to dump the power at the last moment - and it went "boing" ! biggrin.gif
