Back-lit wiper controls-advice please

Recently aquired a 90-91 swb 300ZX Twin Turbo. Noticed that whilst driving at night, the wiper controls to the left of the steering wheel are not illuminated unlike the other switches. Is this a fault I can rectify or is it actually how it was designed? Any suggestions/assistance much appreciated

    Which part of the switch are you refering to? Have a close look at the white markings, you will see that a lot of them are painted on, these obviously won't illuminate however there should be a wiper symbol which lights up.
