 Gents, my Zed has been immobile for over a week now purley because i cant bleed all of the air out of the clutch system :( . I have spent far too many hours laying under/over/ in the car and am starting to get frustrated (the wifes none too keen either as i'm constantly borrowing her car). As far as i know you bleed the slave cylinder on the bell housing and then you bleed the pipe near the front wing. Thats it. It should be easy. But its not happening......

What, and where does the pipe on the front wing go? It appears to dissappear into the corner of the engine bay?

Whenever I'm trying to bleed the air it just seems like a constant stream of bubbles, even though the resevoir is full? I must have passed a litre of oil through and there is still bubbles.

Are there any tricks/ knacks/ techniques to doing this, that i don't know about?

I'm going to try pressurising the sytem by feeding oil back through the wing nipple (with the resevoir cap on) and hopefully that will force all the air out through the slave cylinder. But if that doesn't work what do i try next? Could my master cylinder be knackered? It was working before i changed the clutch hose(?). Any help is more than gratefully received...

sounds like its sucking in are from somewhere..

try putting the car on ramps at the front and re bleed all the air should rise to the highest point failing that i would deffo say sucking in air poss ser cyl seals

passed 2 liters through mine (facing down a steep hill) still no pedal turned car round 2 or 3 more bleeds (slave then master) pedal came back straight away.

It's just a crap design to be honest.

The series 2 cars had a bleed point on the master cylinder to help.

I put a few litres through mine with no luck, left it 3 days and tried again and a load of air came out straight away.

If you're constantly getting air in it while bleeding then there must be a leak somwhere.

I used a 12 volt washer pump to bleed clutches and brakes, open the reservoir cap and have someone watch the level, then open the bleed screw and connect up the pump to the batteries, havent had any problems using that method. Pump req to be bled 1st though as in hold reservoir for pump above it then power it up till fluid is being pumped, then connect to bleed screw in slave cyl.

OOPSIE

If you have a leak its usually easily found this way as well.

Usually the bubbles will stop when its bled up but if you havent got a good pedal after that, leave off the cap and after pressing the clutch about 10 or 15 times, slowly open the bleed screw, wit hgravity any air in the slave with dribble out .

Sorry am forgetful tonight as this should be on 1 post.

That's why you can edit your post... ;)

Problem may be that on clutches you havent got a firm resistance to pump to like you have on brakes.

When you push the clutch pedal the slave cylinder may open up depending upon the spring resistance offered by the clutch itself through the release bearing and arm this will prevent you from really clearing all the air that may be trapped in a pocket. If this is happening can you jam the slave cylinder so that it will not move in and out, then all your pumping goes on the fluid not on moving the cylinder. This also helps to eliminate the slave cylinder as possible source of air ingress.

Im not an expert on the z but this has worked for me on other vehicles in the past. Maybe worth a try if you have not done this already.

Johns suction device sounds like the bees knees to me.

Thanks for all the advice gents. Going to try something similar to johns washer pump tonight.

John are you saying that you are pushing in fluid from the slave to the top or are you sucking oil through the slave from the top?

FYI the car is facing up hill + I have been jacking the front up to get access. Still full of poxy air.

I may try clamping the slave closed, so that when it is released it only pulls in fluid.

Does anyone know where the pipe to the front actually goes?

Cheers, Mark

Mark pump the fluid from the slave cylinder up to the reservoir leaving the cap off and have someone watch for the bubbles stopping. Then stop the pump and close the bleed screw at the slave, and see if you have any pedal.

the bleed pipe goes to a little t manifold underneath the the brake servo bolted to the inner wing. if there is constantly air getting in it may be the clutch master cylinder seals that are pulling air in and need replacing, this can happen sometimes when you disturb the system

Okay, tried pushing new fluid in from the slave up, tried pushing fluid in from the wing down. seems like all the air is out but when the pedal is pumped lots of bleedin' air again. As syko says, the next thing to change is the Master cylinder seals (seeing bubbles appear in the resevoir), and have ordered a new kit from MJP. Cheers for all the info. boys,

Mark
