Parked up tonight, and after a while went to start car, failed to start and noticed a strong smell of fuel, no obvious signs of fuel leak in engine bay...

The car after then getting started began to idle irratically, and stalled, this was then followed by a loud wirring noise from back of the car and heavy fuel rich smelling smoke from the exhaust?

 

Any idea's guys?

maybe, but i cant see how it would cause over fueling. running lean, yes, but it shouldnt make a noise other than a light bzzzzz

I think I may have the same problem. Now my car won't start. I thought it was the PTU and had that changed today but still not starting. It must be the fuel pump I think.

 

Did you solve your problem and ws it definately the fuel pump?

if the pumps not working, hows it getting fuel into the engine and out of the exhaust? I'd remove a plug and see if it's sparking before you tackle the pump.

I think the fuel pump dies a slow death, The pump produces less pressure until it packs in completely. I think this is the stage where my pump is.

from experience, the fuel pump starts to fail and the injectors won't open below a certain pressure - hence car stops. Fuel pump bearings are normally at fault, so once the pump has cooled down, the bearing work again and the pressure returns, car starts but only travels far enough for the bearings to heat up again and reduce the pressure - and car stops again.

 

If you then change the filter (recommended) you often find bits of the fuel pump in there. This also adds to the loss of pressure.

HAVE GOT MY ONE FIXED FIDDED WITH THE TWO SENSORS ON HARD WATER PIPE AT THE FRONT AND STARTED AND NO PROBLEM SINCE :hyper:

check fuel damper and regulator,fuel pumps are not that common to fail

Greg, I am sure its the pump because when I unscrewed the fual cap there was no hiss to indicating that pressure was released.

 

Presumably this points to the pump surely?

best bet maybe is to get hold of a FPR fuel pressure regulator,you can pick one up for around £15 all you need is a gauge that reads more than 50psi,failing that remove hose before damper hold over jerry can and see if your getting fuel either when pump primes .ie. when key is turned to on position,then try it whilst trying to start the car,check you have good fuel flow,then you rule that out ;)

Greg, I pulled the pipe left of the fuel damper (slightly left behind the engine when standing in front) and there was no petrol evident. I turn the ignition on and there was nothing. I then cranked the engine and nothing came out at all. Please tell me this is definately the fuel pump which is at fault as I'm running out of ideas.

VAn did you check the fuse for the fuel pump relay? drivers side rear of engine bay small fuse box ( 4x1inches) large green one IIRC

Zed fuel pumps rarely fail! you should perform a fuel pressure test before changing the pump otherwise you are just going to waste money!

Have you performed an ECU fault code readout?

Jock, yes. I swapped it with the next one which looked identical.

 

Andy, sorry but I have no idea how to carry out a fuel pressure test. I shall try an ECU test though.

It could seem like the fuel pump but it more than likely will not be! and i speak from experiance. :)

Even if the ECU code's come up clear ie: giving a trouble code 55 their still could be a fault with a component!
