was thinking about this today... who on earth thought boost jets and tried it out!! what was the train of thought?...."oh i know ill stick some welding tips in my pressure line to my actuator to give me more boost!"

Its not really a risky trial and error idea. Those that know how Turbocharger system works, knew that restricting the flow to the actuaters increases boost.

It was probably considered at the time the actuators were designed and rediscovered when someone had a leaky pipe there.

In the "early" days people increased boost by shortening the actuator arm, but since on some cars (like the Zed) it's impossible to get to the actuator arms, they started using (adjustable) breather valves, which also increase boost (be it a little unstable)

 

Using jets is an even cheaper/easier solution to breathervalves and it basically does the same thing and as long as you know the correct size jets it doesn't need any calibration.

 

If you ever have to remove the engine/turbos and hoses to the actuators, you will find out that Nissan already used jets to be able to create different boost levels. (regular boost and safety boost)

When was it introduced? Was it by the Japs. Because the thing with the Japs is....They dont mind the odd experiment. They have pioneered some brilliant ideas and put them into everyday use. I think they took the motorcycle and reinvented it and also made it much better than it was. They have given the working class man the chance to compete with the rich and famous with thier sports cars and allowed everyone to enjoy things like Electric windows and strereo systems in your average family car when here it was a luxury. So if it was the Japs that introduced the Boost jets then it dont suprise me at all? :duffer:

During its development they would have know about waste gates and resticting the air flow to it to increase the amount the turbo blew, as I am sure the spitfire pilots could change the boost level from inside the cock pit. There you go evidence of the first boost controller.

 

Considering a boost jet is only a none adjustable boost controller, its hardly rocket science.

I was at work bored. Its amazing what 2 mins searching can find :D

i dont use boost jets, but am i right in saying that in the case of the Z, using a smaller jet increases the boost?

thats the opposite to every other turbo car ive ever worked on if thats how it goes...

bleeding more air off the actuator, prevents it from opening the wastegate,

i still dont see why using two adjustable bleed valves on the Z cant be done. its an adjustable orifice just the same, except you would screw it down to increase boost on the Z.
