is twin air filters worth the cash?

so is it really worth changing the single air intake to two?

If so, what is required?

and what's the best stuff to get?

Cheers,

Ian

No, not really.

The general rule is thats twin filters are a waste of money unless your putting out around 500 ponies and very few of us on here are doing so!

If you are planning that kinda power then I'm sure someone like Chris@GetGreddy will be able to do you one at a very good price and give you some good advice on whats what.

Hope this helps,

Justin:)

How you mean 2 filters? Do you mean a setup where you have one filter to one side like the JWT setup or the smithy one where there are 2 filters going into the 2 hose?

If you have the JWT setup you will need a new chip and a "driveability" mod, which you have to drill into your recirc valve.

I dont entirely agree to what Ian says. If you are producing 450+BHP, you must get the dual pop as a single intake doesnt allow enough air in.

I have read about people who are running 360-370 bhp and have a jwt dual pop and get about 10bhp gain. But I dont know what other mods they have on the car. You may need at least 555cc injectors.

JWT setup?

I was thinking doual pop (where there's two filter hidden away between the headlights - one for each pip leading to it (at least, I THINK that's how it works....)

There is single and dual JWT setup. What SRREA is saying is there are two type of dual setup, Chris greedy style and JWT style.

I personally prefer Ash dual setup, I have not read anything about Chris setup to be able to compare it with Ash spec, but Ash spec has been prove to be better than JWT.

This is a proper dual pop. One filter for each side only.

Smithy's one have the 2 filters sharing the same intake hose which is not as good but still has benifits, plus you dont have to fork out for a new ECU chip.

A nice single intake like an Apexi, Blitz etc is MORE than enough with stock tubs and injectors anything else is a complete waste of cash IMHO!

The Ash (Or DoolZ POP) one has not been proven better. It is a different design where the 2 intakes merge slightly to allow even air flow, this eliminates the need for "Driveablility" mod.

However, where the JWT litterally doubles the amount of air going into the engine the DoolZ only increases it by 70% or so. The Loc[imgation of the MAS is also before the intake join where it really should be after it.

Also Becuase of the size of it, you have to remove the splash gaurd and on some bumpers the air filters are very exposed to the elements.

Neither are perfect. The DoolZ size doesnt help, the MAS location could be better. However you dont need the drivability patch, and it looks cooler.

JWT is more expensive, you need the "Drivability patch" and the 90º turns on the intake is not a good idea and its more expensive. But it does allow more airflow and it can still be protected by the splash gaurd.

I know because I have actually owned both.

D'Oh other picture didnt go on.

This is the DoolZ

thanks for the info.

I reckon I'll be staying with the K&N filter I've got for now then as it doesn't sound like it's worth it for me until I start thinking about a load more ponies.

thanks!

SRRAE, do you still have the Ash spec setup and don't need it I can take off you hands :)

Where is this from and do you need two MAF sensors?

LOL no sold it on.

Cant remember who bought it.

This was a year ago.

Nice looking piece of kit. I bought it but it was not compatable with the JWT chip which doubles the air flow because the MAS is only on 1 side of the intake.

However, the DooLZ needs the MAS to report about 1.7 times as much not twice.

So it was use the JTW which I had or pay $500 for an Ash chip.

I went for the cheaper option.

You can get this from JWT (Jim Wolf Technology)

You dont need 2 MAF but you do need a new chip. The new chip basically doubles the amount of air the 1 MAF is reporting.

You can use 2 MAF which is better, but you need an air flow computer thingy to make it work.

You do need a drivability patch as described in my previous post. Some say you dont need this but you DO. The car would often misfire when pulling away.

I have a DoolZ intake for sale :D

See My 'Garage clearout' thread in the for sale section

:D

s'what spawned the original question chunk ;)
